State Ballet of Georgia

'Giselle, Mixed Bill': Bruce Marriott

"So, an impressive first visit to the UK, I think. If Ananiashvili can achieve this in only four years goodness knows where they will be in four more years."

'Giselle': Margaret Willis

"Throughout the performance, there were evidences of artistic director Nina Ananiashvili's Bolshoi based coaching—large expansive movements, fearless leaps, long lyrical arms with pointed index finger and unhurried steady technique—which gave the whole company polish and style."

Matthew Bourne

'Dorian Gray': Gareth Vile

"Bourne has harnessed the expressionism of ballet to an immediacy that recalls musicals- although the total impact of the lighting, costume and music comes from a willingness to include more experimental approaches."

Rosas - De Keersmaeker

'Steve Reich Evening': Gareth Vile

"In spite of Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker's formidable reputation as a post-modern choreographer and Steve Reich's minimalist prestige, this full evening of repetition and bricolage rapidly becomes tedious and predictable."

Gallimaufry and Greene

'A Night at the Movies': Gareth Vile

"This is the sort of work that the Fringe needs: not a major, well-paid company but one willing to be both populist and challenging."

Dot 504

'Holdin' Fast': Gareth Vile

"By the end, the dancers are crawling beneath carpets, as if trying to escape the audience to enacting their passions beyond our gaze. Holdin' Fast is passionate and provocative, rich in both theatrical skill and emotional content."

Bale de Rua

'Bale de Rua': Gareth Vile

"Bale de Rua is a good humoured show, a wonderful introduction to dance for innocents of all ages, and only the ill-humoured temper of this critic could demand anything deeper."

Irish Cream Bill at Dance Base

Catapult Dance

'Beatbox Bingo': Gareth Vile

"A solid start to the programme, showcasing Rebecca Walter's thoughtful and inventive choreography."

Ferghus O'Conchuir

'Match': Gareth Vile

"It certainly opens up a dialogue between sport and dance, at least in terms of drama and prowess. It is, however, a Platonic meditation, ignoring the social context of the game and concentrating on its pure symbolism."

Legitimate Bodies Dance Company

'Hanging in There': Gareth Vile

"Operating as an in-joke for the dance-crowd, a witty political statement and a profound comment on language's ability to hide or reveal physical reality, Hanging In There would entertain any audience..."

Lost Spectacles

'Lost in the Wind': Gareth Vile

"Lost Spectacles do make huge statements, only by being thoughtful and charming. And this really is a work that can entertain all ages."

Skutr

'The Weepers': Gareth Vile

"Skutr are part of the Czech Festival. They are far closer to contemporary dance, even though they do speak directly to the audience, conjuring up a country cottage through words and mime. Their story is simple..."

'Usch, I say to you, Busse...'
Summer holidays time: "I hit Helsinki fully loaded with cheap booze, beer and cigars. The customs ignore me, the happy famillies tut and by the end of the night the load is much lighter already. Nothing beats beer, bullshit, dead templars and Bush Yoga with a good friend.." (weblog home)

Galina on meeting her Editor (a book is coming out): '‘The first and last hundred pages you could use in a lovely little book. Great content, you observe very elegantly, and the writing is highly accomplished. Good ear, you have, darling. Which, I have to say, got deafened in the middle hundred and eighty-pages, wouldn’t you agree, darling?'  (Weblog Home)

Anjuli Bai is deeply impressed: "This sublime dancer could not be hidden by her everyday clothing. I could easily discern the regal ballerina in a white tutu dancing Balanchine’s Theme and Variations with Baryshnikov to Tchaikovsky’s sweeping music. The Sylph of La Sylphide was there, too..."

Canadian Reviews

National Ballet of Canada

'Cinderella': Penelope Ford

"The result of such a harmony of creative ideals is majestic, with Kudelka's sublime choreography capitalising on the rich nuances of fantasy, comedy and romantic levity of the score."

USA Reviews

American Ballet Theatre

'Rabbit and Rogue, Etudes' bill: Anjuli Bai

"First let me say, it was a stellar evening - literally. Seven of the Company's twelve stars - principals - came out and tore up the stage."

BalletX

'All Female Choreographers Project': Lewis Whittington

"Christine Cox and Matthew Neenan, co-directors of Ballet X, presented their first “All Female Choreographers Project” in July with a breezy, athletic and skillfully arranged program of three premieres."

Zhukov Dance Theatre

'Product 01: MandW, Passing': Renee Renouf

"The finish in this two-night program was a marvel, a reassuring vitality in the sphere of classical ballet. The question is when the ensemble will appear again, so that the carefully selected dancers can solidify this impressive debut."

Bay Area Tap Festival

'2008 Bay Area Tap Festival': Renee Renouf

"If the warmth and size of the audience Saturday night was any indication, two evenings can henceforth be routine for San Francisco's mid-August frolics."

Hong Kong Reviews

Hong Kong Ballet

'Coppelia': Natasha Rogai

"Saturday night was blessed with three truly star performances. Kyoko Tomimura is a natural soubrette and makes an ideal Swanhilda – mischievous and feisty but warm-hearted. Her expressive acting was matched by dancing of precision, speed and lightness."

Hong Kong Dance Company

'Hong Kong Spring': Natasha Rogai

"This thought-provoking, entertaining show is a tribute to the talent and enthusiasm of all concerned."

E-Side Dance Company

'A Showcase of Asian Dancers': Natasha Rogai

"The idea was interesting and did give some idea of different tastes and styles within the region (the contributions from Mainland China were notably less sophisticated than those from Hong Kong and Taiwan, for instance) but the overall standard of the choreography was far from high and at times the show resembled a school performance rather than a professional production."

UK Reviews

National Ballet of China

'Swan Lake': Jeffery Taylor

"Farmer's sets aside, a great deal of the right effort has gone into the Chinese Swan Lake, technical finesse, timing and emphasis, but it remains a classic example of the sterility of style over substance. Now is the time for an inspirational leader to instil the magical mystery ingredient called love."

'Raise the Red Lantern': Bruce Marriott

"The company, so dramatically repressed in their Swan Lake, looked entirely driven by a piece that is their own and far from alien. God help us when they fuse the drama of Lantern to the good choreography their technique demands."

Guangdong Acrobatic Troupe of China

'Swan Lake': Ian Palmer

"...a spectacle re-telling of Swan Lake, which does to the old, venerated ballet what Liberace did to the classical piano."

'Swan Lake': Bruce Marriott

"Holy Crap, Batman! (this is a different type of show so I thought I'd start in a different way). ...It's all so off the wall you owe it to yourself to go and be stupefied too - Splat!"

West Side Story

'West Side Story': Jeffery Taylor

"But this production looks too low budget with not enough money spent on Paul Gallis's excellent and flexible scrap iron tenements flavoured with sepia shots of contemporary New York. Nor are the dancers quite good enough."

In the period from 1 August to 30 August (last update of this page) we have 369 links for you.

Alternatively try searching for exactly what you are after with our: Reviews Advanced Search page

All our links list dancer details, a full list of pieces performed and a brief quote that gives the flavour of the review. Sadly not all papers maintain their links and so we cannot absolutely guarantee any particular URL. Enjoy, and if you think we have missed a review do send us a link.

The ballet.co Screensaver

What professional site would be complete without a screensaver! Courtesy of Louis we bring you the ballet.co screensaver and its absolutely free.

You need to be running Windows 95 and we can deliver it in 2 ways depending on if you have the capability to handle zip files (or not). Zip files are smaller and hence load much quicker, but you need special software to decode them. If you are not sure best to use the larger exe file.

Once its on your machine, double click on install.exe, it will tell you the screensaver is installed, then go into the control panel, double click on display and follow your nose to the screensaver section where you should find our ballet one listed. Here are the links to get the screensaver;

ballet.co screensaver as an zip file (1132Kb)
ballet.co screensaver as an exe file (2293kb)

These are not small files and might take more than a few minutes to load. The screensaver has been produced using professional software and as such should work on all (Windows95) machines. We can't however offer guarantees (though we would be gob-smacked if there are any probs). Enjoy!
