"Mini Poll - ENB Artistic Director" |
Any suggestions as to who is going to take over from Mr Deane? What about a mini poll on the subject. My 15 yr old daughter suggests Irek!

I've been wondering this myself (for some time, actually). A few possibles came to mind, but I suspect they are all wedded too closely to the Royal Ballet for ENB. BTW, anyone know how Matz Skoog's doing down in New Zealand?

That should not stop them applying. How about Bruce Samson who is training in Ballet admin or Kevin O'Hare who is certainly interested in management for starters. I am sure there are others who would make a good list for the next mini-poll. Pauline

Nice to hear that. I wasn't seriously suggesting him as a candidate, though, just reflecting that RB and other principal dancers seem to end up being ADs, and he was the only one who came to mind as an ex-ENB. Presumably somebody with some previous experience in the role would be required, which might rule out some of the other suggestions.

In answer to 'How is Matz Skoog doing in NZ", I have heard very positive review on all the ballets he has directed. He has changed a lot of New Zealanders attitudes to Ballet which is saying something as New Zealand is a country in which Rugby is dominant culturall influence. He has been invloved in producing some amzing ballets which have drawn some of the bigest crowds ever - or so I have heard from other friend in NZ.

May I suggest someone with administrative experience. Being a great dancer does not necessarily make someone a great ballet director. No one would suggest giving the Man United Coaching Job to David Beckham!Would be ballet director should do their rounds in the regional campanies before taking on the major leagues in my view.

I've frequently wondered why it always seems to be ex-principal dancers who become ADs. Are we to assume that there's something inherently unsuitable about, say, first soloists or equivalent? Anybody got any thoughts on that?

It's a shame that Peter Wright is now too old. But I think he has proably been the best AD in the UK of recent times. Others have done well - I think - but Peter's programming seemed to command almost universal respect, which is incredibly rare.

I think this is a very interesting point, and I have a few observations. Probably the reason why principal dancers have gotten the AD positions is first, their name value, but also that they have the respect of the dancers they are about to lead (in theory, anyway). There may very well be intelligent, thoughtful first soloists (or senior corps dancers, for that matter) who would make excellent artistic directors. In addition to the ability to look at the whole picture, which any director should have, in my opinion, I think they would have to understand why they were first soloists and not principal dancers. (I think many do, but some dancers believe that their lack of advancement is for any reason other than the lack of qualities that make a principal dancer, whether in technique or projection.) I think if they don't understand this, they will never really understand how to promote and cast others. There are examples of dancers who did not have completely fulfilled careers who have become directors and the results have not been happy. They are still living their own careers -- trying one last time to get the fame they didn't have as dancers, or to let everyone have a chance at any role they want because they didn't have that chance, etc.

Dear Bruce,I'll throw my two cents in this ring: a penny each. Michael Corder (I think would be excellent), or why not take a chance on Chris Wheeldon. Risks are what is needed if ENB is to thrive a la difference, which is much needed. Just a suggestion.

Risks >are what is needed if >ENB is to thrive a >la difference, which is much >needed. ENB certainly needs something to give it a touch of la difference; sadly we live in unadventurous times. Look at West End theatre for example; there's no money for plays, so actors spend their time in musicals. Often the quality of the writing is dubious, and they can't all sing; after all, they are actors, not singers, so what should you expect? Our orchestras are having a thin time of it, and there is genuine concern as to how many orchestras will exist ten years from now. Opera seems to thrive in the video age, but a lot of the money sloshing around is from corporate entertaining, so its safe stuff for bums on seats. But there must be a place somewhere for a company which is really imaginatively led; look at what Christopher Bruce has done for Rambert. DD has done a good job for ENB in raising standards; I remember LFB just before he took over..........enough said. However, I regard ENB's dire programming as being the balletic equivalent of one blockbuster musical after another. No wonder dancers leave; they must get bored out of their minds. When you think of what Markova and Dolin did on their travels, ENB is not seen to be upholding their legacy. Sometimes the ENB orchestra sounds as if the players are also bored; on tour, they can be unpredictable, to say the least. This needs sorting out. ENB is neither English nor national, unless you count the fact that it tours to the regions of England. The sort of person who would take it forward would perhaps be someone like Sylvie Guillem; someone at least with intelligence and flair, who would respect the whole repertoire (including some 20th century rep. for a change)but bring in something fresh as well.

I couldn't help but notice that very few Female Artistic Directors have appeared in your list.No , I'm not talking sexuall discrimination. But surely we can come up with one or two who have what it takes to pressure Arts Councils/ Lotteries/Theatres/Choreographers/Designers/Composers et al,to plow there talents/monies/genieus in to a National Company? How about Germane Grear ( Grerrrrrrrrr!!!)? Mo Mowlem?

26. "RE: Female candidates would be good" |
Stephanie - when I posted the idea of "someone like Sylvie Guillem" I was thinking then "a pity she may not yet be ready for a top job as an AD"; as you say, when she stops performing she'll be able to focus more outside of herself. Who knows when that will be.An important factor I think is that ENB should not be too heavily influenced by the RB, so that might count out some people. The RB has its particular place (guardians of the Ashton tradition - we hope - etc.), and there is always BRB with its own distinctive relationship to the RB, coming from the same tradition. ENB needs to be aware of the possibility of something different, and that doesn't mean sugary extravaganzas. I would prefer someone with, say, NYCB experience, but obviously able to deal with a broad repertoire. I guess that someone like Wendy Whelan will be a good candidate for this kind of work in time. If you look at the NYCB web-site you'll see how many ex-NYCB dancers are now Artistic Directors, or in similarly important posts. There are some good names there. So, who's it to be? A pity Jacques d'Amboise is 66! He's done everything, and is now Director of the National Dance Institute in NY. But then, Bobby Robson is still in football management at a similar age. Whose would you rather direct, dancers or footballers? Whoever it is to take over at ENB, male or female, young or old, the board should beware of playing it safe; we need a bit of audience-challenging adventure, or else we'll all die of a surfeit of kitsch.

27. "RE: Female candidates would be good" |
I'm surprised that no one has proposed Anna-Marie Holmes as the new ENB director. She has strong connections with ENB - having danced with (the then) Festival Ballet in the 70s. She has been artistic director of the Boston Ballet for 4 years and was Asst. AD for 5-6 years before that - so no one can deny her administrative experience. In contrast to Derek Deane's much-criticised productions of the classics, she has produced extremely successful versions of Sleeping Beauty, Don Quixote, Swan Lake (in cooperation with the Kirov), La Bayadere, and Le Corsaire - the video-ed production for ABT won an Emmy. In addition she has brought in works by 20th C. choreographers such as Balanchine, MacMillan, Robbins, Paul Taylor, Roland Petit, Rudi Van Danzig, Mark Morris, Daniel Pelzig and Nacho Duato. Additionally she has named Christopher Wheeldon choreographer-in-residence and brought in works by Michael Pink (The Hunchback of Notre Dame) and Michael Corder (Cinderella and Danses Concertantes). I should think that with her administrative and dance qualifications plus the past connections with ENG she is an obvious choice for the directorship.

no, actually, alison, the only one out of that list that happened on marks' 'watch' was the swan lake, which he readily admitted to one and all was done only because of her, and to which i can attest he had little or nothing to do with in the studio. the rest is all hers.
