PRESS RELEASE
MILLICENT HODSON
LE SACRE DU PRINTEMPS (THE RITE OF SPRING)
27 JULY - 20 AUGUST 2003Gallery K will present drawings by the choreographer Millicent Hodson from 27 July to 20 August
2003 to complement her staging of the original version of Vaslav Nijinsky's Le Sacre du Printemps to
the famous score by Igor Stravinsky. The work will be performed by the Kirov Ballet of St. Petersburg
at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, as part of its summer season in London.
Hodson reconstructed Nijinsky's lost choreography from 1913, working with the design consultant
Kenneth Archer who reconstructed the decors and costumes by Nicholas Roerich. They traced
documents of the original ballet from all over the world and then Hodson created her own series of
drawings in order to stage the choreography.

The exhibition will include dance sketches of Kirov dancers, such as lulia Mahalina, Daria Pavlenko and
Alexandra losifidi, who dance the solo of the Chosen One in Le Sacre du Printemps.
Le Sacre is an archaic Slavic ritual in which a young maiden dances herself to death to ensure the return
of spring. Nijinsky conceived the ballet as a ritualistic ordeal for all the 47 dancers. Each of them has an
independent role, culminating in 44 simultaneous solos. The ballet climaxes with the sacrificial dance of
the Chosen One.
Millicent Hodson's drawings have been exhibited throughout Europe, the United States, Canada, South
America and Japan. They have been published widely in various art and dance publications. Her
reconstruction drawings for Le Sacre Du Printemps are featured in her book Nijinsky' s Crime Against
Grace published by Pendragon Press, New York, in 1996. The book will be available for signing by the
artist at the exhibition.
Hodson has had two major solo exhibitions at Gallery K since 1997 and she regularly participates in the
gallery's group shows.
