How does everyone feel about Arina Cojocaru and Marianela Nunez? I haven't been fortunate to see any performances by them (actually, I did, but they only danced the corps...), and I would love to hear any criticism/comments. Are there any other "rising stars" in RB at the moment?

Pleased to say the link to Jann's piece is in our InterViews and News database.. but here is a direct link: Observer Link
It's probably just me, but I don't think of Tamara as a rising star in the same way as the others - she is risen(!) if not all the public yet know it. (... and anyway my car is called Tamara and its a star for sure!)

I think all the people mentioned in the article are amazing (apart from johan phersson who i've never seen dance) and though I think Alina is especially suited for the role of giselle (Actually she's probably suited for every major role in the ballet rep) I don't think its fair that she gets a go at it over Jamie Tapper, who has been in the company for longer and would probably give a more mature rendering of the role. Anyone agree/disagree?

Guy, I can see why you think it's a bit "unfair" that Alina is cast as Giselle, over other dancers, when she is so young. But when has ballet casting ever been "fair"? It's never been done by seniority, at least in this country. I'm sure Jaimie will have her turn, and I know what you mean about mature interpretations - but Jaimie is not very old either! I do think Alina will make a good Giselle - as you say, she'd probably make a good anything. I'd love to see her do it, but it's around Easter, and I don't think I'll be able to get there.

Agree about it all being 'unfair' but that is ballet/dance life. Difficult decisions have to be taken. I'm sure that if in some magical way we were to become Artistic Directors than after 2 or 3 years most of us would have appointed at least half the company to principal level! In practice it can't happen.
And I do like Jaimie Tapper (or Trapper Tapper as Eugene charmingly christened her - if only by mistake!). And then there is Belinda Hatley, Mara, Zenaida...

Thanks for all the information! It seems to me that recently, the RB is allowing dancers to enter their company, even if they do not have the RBS background. I actually did see Marianela dance the peasant pas de deux this July, but to me, she didn't seem to have the stylistic qualities of a RB dancer (Sorry, if I sound a little harsh here...) -- I thought she resmebled Paloma... I wonder if RB is starting to turn into an international company very much like ABT...???

I saw Nunez dance the peasant pdd as well, and wasn't sure, on the basis of that (which is the only thing I've seen her in where I could definitely identify her), what the fuss was about. Perhaps we'll realise later.
