"Press Release: Dance Books to leave London"

   PRESS RELEASE:

DANCE BOOKS TO LEAVE LONDON

Dance Books is to leave London at the end of November this year, and relocate to Hampshire.

David Leonard, Managing Director of Dance Books, said:

"The lease on our shop in Cecil Court has recently expired, and we have been unable to agree on new terms with our landlords, or to find suitable premises elsewhere in central London. In addition, the amount of 'over the counter' business has declined over the last few years, whereas the publishing, mail order, and educational supply parts of the business have greatly expanded.

With considerable regret, the Directors have therefore decided that the time has come to leave central London and concentrate on these activities, and we have located suitable premises in Alton, Hampshire. We are grateful to our many personal clients for their support over more than thirty-five years, and shall look forward to continuing to supply them by mail order. All our other activities, including the publication of our journal, Dance Now will of course continue as usual."

The move is expected to take place at the end of November: full details will follow in due course.

   Dear David

As one of your 'over the counter' clients - maybe not for thirty-five years, but for quite a few! - may I thank you for all your help and enthusiasm during that time. I hope your new location proves a great success - you will be much missed, though.

Julia

The very best for the move and every success for the future, but I'm so sad to see the shop going I have to say. Romeing around an e-commerce site is just not the same - if v efficient.

I am absolutely shocked! I understand the reasons, of course, and certainly wish you the very best of luck for the future; but a visit to Covent Garden for me has always included a browse round Dance Books before the performance. You will be missed so much.

This is a real shock, David, but I'd have to say I wondered how long you could last in such a prime location. We're all really going to miss you - going into Dance Books was like stepping into a treasured part of the past.

Very best wishes to the Dance Books 'team'. No doubt some of us will find an excuse to visit you in your new location.

   How sad!

I will miss coming to your shop.

I hope you make massive cost savings and loose little revenue thanks to email etc.

Please keep us in touch regarding specially commissioned works and videos.

Thank

Eugene

   Dear David,
I used to LIVE (well nearly) in the shop when I lived in London - back in the Dark Ages of the 70s. It is very sad for me to think that the next time I return it will no longer be there. Dance Books was a part of MY London, and it shall be sorely missed. I wish you all the very best in Alton.

David, sad news yes! Dance Books was one of my first ports of call when I arrived here years ago from downunder. I always evnied Londoners who could just pop in to pick up their books and magazines and not have to wait while they were shipped out. Chukkas for your new home!

Thank goodness this news has reached us before my husband goes Christmas shopping in London! Baby Tim and I can walk down into town and browse for my presents in person, and send Daddy out with a note telling him exactly where on the shelf to look! Welcome to Alton, and I look forward to seeing you in a month or so!

I am really sad to learn that Dance Books will be leaving London but wish you all the best in Alton. I will miss the opportunity of popping in to the shop and browsing. London's loss in Alton's gain.

Sad news in Italy too, where, when a friend was back from London, the first question was "what's new at Dance Books?".
I'll miss the serene and calm atmosphere of Cecil Court, that won't be the same after Your departure.
Best wishes for the new setting. I've not understood if there will be a direct selling point, but a visit is needed, overall to prove that you will not become virtual at all.

Here's appreciation for the time I've spent browsing through such a wide-ranging stock, especially when new publications are on the scene.

We musn't forget the publishing side of Dance Books. I've just acquired a new DB publication, Stephanie Jordan's book "Moving Music", being an exploration into the relationship between music and 20th century choreography. Written by someone who was trained in both music and dance, and who worked professionally in both, this is the sort of specialist work that is good to find; who else would publish such a detailed, scholarly text concerning this relatively restricted area of study? Thanks to Dance Books for making it available.

Best wishes for the continued success of Dance Books publications.
