   Something about the music....

Penguin Cafe Orchestra founded by Simon Jeffes (born Sussex 1949)- studied classical guitar - played music ranging from the avant-garde with the Omega Players (classical guitarists)to experimental rock (including making interesting string arrangements).

He formed the Penguin Cafe Orchestra in 1972, giving him performing possibilities for his compositions. It was named after an imaginary cafe, about which he wrote, describing its surreal atmosphere; this inspired the music. Recordings, South Bank Show (1987), performances in many countries (Europe, Japan, N. America), and broadcasts followed.

For the Ballet, David Bintley chose eight pieces from the recordings, which Jeffes re-scored for more conventional orchestra (though still with loads of interesting percussion).
Bintley used Jeffes' titles except for "Horns of the Bull" which became "Long Distance" (the third section of the ballet, featuring the the Texan Kangaroo Rat), and "Pythagoras's
Trousers" which became "The Ecstacy of the Dancing Fleas" (the fourth section of the ballet, featuring Humboldt's Hog-nosed Skunk Flea - where I remember seeing Sandra Madgwick annoying a group of what looked like Morris Dancers). (Just to confuse the issue, Simon J wrote another piece under the same title - the E of the D Fleas).

This is mainly from BRB notes - don't they have something on it in their ed. dept? - like the rhythm patterns in the music, and how these are realised in the chor.- I had heard recordings of the PCOrch some time before I saw the ballet the first time - all good stuff, might have featured in WOMAD productions? It rings a bell somehow. Hope this makes sense -it's late!

BRB Friends (Sheila 0121 622 2555 ext 3504) has a lovely poster of penguin cafe and of course videos of the ballet - if you buy it from them the proceeds go to BRB.

BRB's Education Department has produced a resource pack on 'Still Life' due to the recent demand for information on the ballet. It includes general comments on the inspiration, structure, music, design, style etc; an interview with David Bintley; detailed analysis of each scene; suggested practical uses with choreographic tasks; copies of reviews, performance history etc.

An order form is available by calling me on 0121 622 2555 extension 3531. The pack is currently being printed and should be ready to send out by mid-October. We also have videos/CDs of the work.

We are also doing a lecture/demonstration on the ballet as part of the NDTA conference at the Royal Opera House in December; and have produced an INSET package which has been offered to LEAs.

Hi Rachel,

Is there any chance of getting anything from you from the resource kit on Still Life here in Sydney before end of October? I've been lecturing year 10 students and we have studied the ballet on video.
