Go see. Very dramatic and the finale leaves you gasping. As with Bourne, not particularly balletic but he has a great cast. Car Man roles are shared between Ewan Wardrop, Alan Vincent and Will Kemp, tho each take turns also in the role of the wimpish Angelo. Les Brotherston's sets are brilliant. I saw it a couple of months ago and as Bourne continually refines and improves the show, by the time it gets to the Old Vic it should be great.

I would say definitely go and see. I've seen it three times whilst it was on tour, and enjoyed it more each time. If you want details, the cast rotations for the main characters during the tour were as follows: DINO (owner of the garage and Dino's diner): Scott Ambler/Neil Penlington/Adam Galbraith. LANA (Dino's wife): Saranne Curtin/Michaela Meazza/Vicky Evans. RITA (Lana's sister): Etta Murfitt/Emily Piercy/Heather Habens. ANGELO (Rita's boyfriend): Will Kemp/Ewan Wardrop/Arthur Pita. LUCA (a drifter): Alan Vincent/Ewan Wardrop/Will Kemp/Ben Hartley. For most of the performances, Scott was dancing Dino, and for the latter part of the tour, Will Kemp was suffering from a severe injury. I'm not sure if he has recovered sufficiently yet. AMP tend not to publish a cast list in advance, as changes are made right up to the last minute, covering sickness and injuries (and even when you pick up the cast list at the theatre just before the performance, it isn't always correct!). This is understandable however, as with a relatively limited number in the company, they all cover several different roles, and dance at most of the performances. Why don't you try it more than once, as you might get lucky and see a range of casts. Anyway, I hope you enjoy it - I find it a great combination of dance, drama and realistic visual effects (can't say any more, as I don't want to spoil anything for you).

   Dear Ann and Jane,
Thanks very much for your comments on THE CAR MAN.....I just wanted you to know that we will be setting up a CASTING HOT LINE in the next couple of days , so that you will know who is due to perform. The OLD VIC Box Office should also have this information for up to 4 weeks in advance. You will also be pleased to know that Will Kemp is now fully fit and will be performing the roles of Angelo and Luca throughout the run. We're all very excited to be in our new home and have made some great improvements to the show. I hope that you will be able to see the show again and thanks so much for your support.
Best Wishes
Matthew Bourne

Saw this in Sheffield with Will Kemp, Michela Meazza and Ewan Wardrop in the main roles. Will, in particular, gave an extremely moving performance as the abused and imprisoned Angelo. Great to hear that he's dancing again.

I'm far too intimidated following Matthew Bourne's posting to venture further opinion here ( although a search of postings might reveal previous comments ! ) - Suffice to say I enjoyed it greatly and already have my tickets booked for the Old Vic next month.

Hope all goes well for AMP and the Old Vic. - Don't suppose you want to give us any hints about your "improvements" Matthew ?

LAST EDITED ON 31-08-00 AT 02:32 PM (GMT)

I hope the Hotline isn't on the AMP website. Matthew, if you're listening can you ask your boffins to do something about it. I just can't get into it. Has anybody else got this trouble. I think it's something to do with the graphics, though I'm not an expert.

ANN: I'm no expert, but I don't have any problems accessing AMP's website, even though I have quite an old computer. Do you get into the site at all, or not? It's possible you may need to download something called "Shockwave" to help with the graphics. This is offered as a download from AMP's site, but that's no good if you can't get in! MATTHEW: I'm delighted to hear about the Casting Hotline, as I'm sure AMP's office were fed up with me keep phoning them earlier in the year trying to find out when Alan Vincent was dancing Luca, as I'd already seen Ewan in that role. Incidentally, everyone at the office was very patient with me pestering them, and someone very kindly phoned me back when the cast had been confirmed. Very impressive. I'm even more pleased to hear that Will has recovered - it must have been so frustrating for him when he was off for so long. I'm looking forward to seeing whoever's dancing what next Monday at the Old Vic, and to enjoying what changes have been made since I saw it last. (I heard the Entr'acte from Act 2 this morning on Classic FM, and it brought a big smile to my face, remembering the situation the dancer's are representing on the stage at that point!)

The Car Man is brilliant, we saw it in Eastbourne and the whole
audience loved it,apart from,I believe, an elderly couple at Sat.
matinee! The girl selling ice cream at the interval was almost in
tears at the thought that she wouldn`t see it again, but she
cheered up when I told her it would be on in London in Sept.!
SO DO SEE IT!

Jane, thanks for your advice. My computer's a Pentium and fairly new. So I thought I'd have another go. I finally got in to the AMP site by refreshing the screen four times, reloaded Shockwave, even though I had done so before and thought... Ah, cracked it! An hour later I was still waiting to get into the News page. Just gave up. Good job it was the weekend so no huge phone bills. Wish I knew what was wrong.

I have the same trouble but have found that if I just keep clicking on refresh I eventually get there - though it may take up to 10 goes!! Don't bother with long waits - if it doesn't appear within about 10 seconds, it's not going to so just click refresh again.

Dear Ann: I've just got in from seeing the first performance of Car Man at the Old Vic, and I agree totally about Will as Angelo. I've now seen three diferent Angelos: Ewan Wardrop, Arthur Pita and Will Kemp and I think I like Will's best. Trouble is, what if I like him best as Luca? I've seen Ewan and Alan Vincent so far, and honours are about even, but I'm going to have to see it again with Will. The show went really well, and the packed audience loved it, with a good half of the place giving the cast a well deserved standing ovation at the end. Lots of stuff sharpened up, and tightened up dramatically, and all in all I loved it even more, if that's possible. Incidentally, the cars have been changed! No more friendly Moggie 1000, but some very rusty, more authentic looking American heaps. That should shut some of the nit-picky critics up, I hope.

I thought it was very good. An exciting evening of dance drama, with wonderful sets and an interesting musical arrangement of Bizet for small chamber group and lots of percussion! It is danced very well and one hopes it will do well at The Old Vic. I cannot help thinking it is following on the tradition of dance drama in English Ballet as at the old Vic Wells Company, so the venue is apt.One ought to mention that it is fairly sexy, hetersexual, homosexual and violently sexual, but if you are grown up I am sure you can cope with it. I suggest you buy tickets and go.

JANE: Glad you liked Will's performance as Angelo ( Er, was it my comments above you were agreeing with ? )
I must confess ( not wishing to sound nit-picky ) that I'm really pleased they decided to change the set and have American cars. It seems an irrelevant point, but in fact it just rang a wrong note against the otherwise credible hot and moody mid-west set.
Can't wait to see it.

Dear Carly, you're quite right, it was your comment about Will that I was replying to, although I know Ann and I have exchanged postings before about AMP's various cast members. Sorry about that, but it was quite late at night and I was still buzzing with what had been a very zappy performance, and also the party afterwards for Friends and company members, which was fun as well. I'm really glad I made the effort to go, as I was actually on holiday for the week from Friday 1st, and drove back up from Longleat to London for the performance, but it was definitely worth it. As for the cars, I can't say that the English cars bothered me that much, as there was quite a strong export market of British cars to America, even in the 50's, but I know some people found it a bit odd. I didn't mean, however, that I thought YOU were being nit-picky, but the critics who wrote in the papers. They seemed to be desperate to find something bad to say about the production, and if they didn't want to appear prudish (so couldn't moan about the sex) the only thing they found to criticise were the cars! Considering all the good things they could have found to say about Car Man, it seemed a bit mean, that's all. I can't wait to see it again.

I went to see the Car Man on Monday. I enjoyed it very much and agree that Will as Angelo is just wonderful.

However there were a few points that left me wondering if I would pay to go again. Maybe people can give me their view on it.

- As Swan Lake was on so recently and is still fresh in my memeory, I found it dramatically a little disappointing. At the end, I didn't have enough sympathy with any of the the characters except Angelo so the ending really didn't do much for me.
- I find that Bourne's choreography for men v good, but a little lacking for women.

What do you think?
