"The Varna Competition, 2000"

   August 21, 2000

Would very much appreciate it if someone could inform me where
I can find a listing of the outcome of the Varna Competition
and also a listing of the judges. The Varna Competition Web
page is up only to 1998.

Many thanks.

Renee - Greetings. You can find daily reports on the Varna competition--including list of judges and prizes--in the 'Ballet Talk' messageboard within Alexandra Tomalonis' website, www.balletalert.com. Once you've found 'Ballet Talk,' look for the 'News, Views, Issues' forum. Be sure to select 'view messages during the past 30 days.' I attended rounds two and three.

I'm putting the finishing touches on an summary article, with photos, for publication in a print journal. In the meantime, you can obtain the 'candid scoop' from the above.

Nutshell edition: No Grand Prix. Gold medals to China (Sr. men, Sr. Ladies-tie), Georgia (sr. ladies-tie) & Japan (jr men). No gold in jr ladies; USA-Kirov Academy & China shared silver. Korea won Best Couple. It was a glorious year for Asia in this competition. Many beautiful up-and-coming stars from China, Japan & Korea. No Russian made it to Round Three...a first. - Jeannie

Dear Jeannie and Wendy: Thank you for such a service. The
results I find particularly interesting since Laura Hidalgo was
the "junior" dancer at the Ballets Russes Celebration in New
Orleans in June. I found her versatile and a quick learner -
would characterize her as broad shouldered and healthy in the
style of Kyra Nichols and some of the Ballet Russe vintage, but
not chubby. She certainly possesses an arresting face.
I spent six days in Korea the end of July at the invitation of
Hae Shik Kim who was the Korean Juror at Jackson whom Jeannie
will remember. The Korean National University of the Arts is
quite a place and Hae Shik has spared no effort to build the
program there into one which needs to apologize to no one. There
are several dancers who have studied both in St. Petersburg and
in Moscow in the KNB and I believe the young Bronze winner in
New York had studied at the Kirov Academy.

Jeannie, your reports are as lively and thorough as I remember
them in Jackson. Brava! Thanks again. Renee Renouf

Renee (cc. to all readers) - These contests are infectuous, aren't they? I already have my ticket for Moscow2001 next June; cheaper if purchased way in advance. Looking forward to seeing you at Jackson2002, I hope; that should make it seven in a row that you will have attended, eh? I just received the announcement of competition dates for Jackson(June 15 through 30, 2002).

Thanks for the information about Ms. Kim and the school affiliated with the Korean University. The young senior pair who made finals & won 'best couple' at Varna are affiliated with the Korean National Ballet & the university school. The young lady, Ms. Bo, is a graduate of the Vaganova Academy in St. Petersburg but received most of her training in Seoul. She is absolutely gorgeous & I particularly loved to see the flirty interaction between both dancers in pas de deux. I brought back a video of their competition performances in 'Talisman pdd' and 'Halte du Cavalerie pdd,' which are absolutely precious due to their facial expressions & demeanor. Very '19th-century deportment,' if you know what I mean. Two dolls in the music box. I believe that they won Best Couple more on style & presentation than on technique (not that technique was shabby).

p.s. - If you've been trying to contact me via home e-mail, it is down. Please use office e-mail attached to this message. - Jeannie
