All the muse that fits, as they say in NY. The Festival that likes to say yes to the world is grasping America to its bosom this year, writes Debra Craine:

There is also a review in the FT today, with Clement Crisp praising Romeo and Juliet, the principals in particular (even Tybalt, which I found rather odd!). Sorry, I'm useless with links and things, but presume it can be found electronically.

Thanks Jane, what an interesting piece.

The final sentence bears some scrutiny:

"The Kirov may now hope to cut out the Western impresarios and manage its affairs abroad itself. But to succeed, it must leap higher and with greater sparkle than it did on Monday."

Was it not the Kirov Friends - presumably close to the company - who brought them over earlier in the summer and to so much critical acclaim, whereas now they are being presented by Western impresarios.... all of which would seem to imply that left to themselves they know what to do and, most importantly, bother.

On the other hand impresarios manage risk and only the seriously switched on survive as long as the Hochhauser's.

Without the intervention of a forgotten
English ballerina, the recent historic production of The Sleeping Beauty might never have happened. Ismene Brown meets its unsung heroine, Mona Inglesby

One and one makes perfect. Two of Russia's greatest ballet stars who rarely perform together are appearing in London. They don't think much of British dance, though, they tell Louise Levene:

Motion picture. V-TOL have a unique line in "dance-cinema" performances. Now, at Blazing 2000, their choreographer Mark Murphy wants to teach you his secrets. Susan Corrigan listens and learns:
