"RB Giselle - 27th July matinee"

Just a few quick thoughts, as time is pressing:

Yoshida and Kobborg danced this beautifully: Yoshida as light as thistledown in the second act, and Kobborg as good a jumper in his solos as you might expect from someone brought up in the Royal Danish Ballet. Very well matched in temperament as well as physically, being such modest dancers there was nothing flash about them at all, just very moving, and they certainly managed to erase my memories of the lacklustre performance/production I saw by BRB recently. Miyako's mad scene was very understated, but all the more moving because of it when she suddenly became frenetic and distressed. Also impressive was Vanessa Palmer as Myrtha: as far as I know, it's the biggest role she's had so far, and certainly I haven't seen her in it before, but if it was her debut she looked very assured, even when she had to dance for several minutes with a fair amount of her skirts caught on her wings!

A lovely performance, and worth catching if you can - they're performing at the matinee on Saturday, and there may still be tickets left.

I got a mailing from Hochauser saying "two top price seats for the price of one at all the RB matinees" - worth a try?

Maybe, although I gather the expensive seats were pretty full yesterday - I had to get rear amphitheatre (quite a few left, but then what do you expect if you can get 2 seats in the stalls for less?), which was a bit of a shock after the Stalls Circle, where I've been most of the rest of the time recently.

That reminds me of something I left out yesterday while I had a load of people in the cybercafe having heated discussions in my earhole(!) and distracting me: I forgot to say how taken I was with Kobborg's acting. All through that terribly embarrassing part of the first act when he realises that he's about to be found out by his fiancée and is wondering what on earth to do, his thoughts were showing so clearly (but without hamming) on his face. Only trouble was, and I don't know whether it was due to the subdued lighting or to the fact that dancers seem to wear a lighter makeup these days, I couldn't see the dancers' features at all clearly without using the binoculars, so I would have to say the performance probably didn't carry to the back of the House as well as it could have done.

Actually on Saturday matinee, several expensive seats were unoccupied, luring people enough to cause distraction, especially when the stall circle door (just behind Sir Dowell!) was opened at least four times during the performance.

Anyway the performance was simply touching, as Alison and Bruce wrote. Both Yoshida and Kobborg were technically excellent of course, and they really were a great match. So light, restrained, yet the most convincing pair I've seen. I wonder when Giselle brought tears to my eyes last. Also the corp looked more drilled than last year. Wonderful afternoon.
