Guillem and Cope delivered the goods I thought - given it was the opening night some tightness we will see later was not there, but it was fine stuff. I think they are the best of those who currently dance Manon... but, for me, still not quite as stupefying as Durante and Mukhamedov. Last night Irek did a great Lescaut though.

Overall I thought the performance most notable for some of the newer soloists coming through - Chloe Davies was a Courtesan as was Nunez... the later having a good 'fight' with Vanessa Palmer - it was much more realistic than we normally see.

Saw Bussell and Zelensky tonight - or rather the first 2 acts. Both lovely dancers but they don't seem to have developed so much of a rapport. The moves in pdd were there but not joined up somehow and he seemed totally lost at the end of their first pdd. Nice to see Belinda Hatley back as Lescaut's Mistress - her movement clear as a bell! And the Burley Lescaut is really rather good. Getting on a par with Irek even...

So what do others think?

>Yes, I would agree with this - for me Durante and Mukhamedov had something really special in Manon. I have always wished that their performance of Manon was on video but alas with Irek not likely to dance this role again, it was not to be. So if not them why not Sylvie and Johnny on video as others have mentioned.
>Alas I don't think we shall see Irek and Viv together on stage again. He now seems to work with Altynai as he begins to do more freelance work which is great but dramatically I think his performances with Viv were the best.

>Clement Crisp who is a great admirer of Mukhamedov thought the Lescaut was a bit of a parody this time. That's a turn up for the books.

   It was fantastic.
Sylvie was as good as ever. Developing the character beautifully and managing to dance as though that's normal and everyday way for someone to move. Johnathan Cope I thought gave an even more technically and emotionally convincing performance than I've previously seen from him. But of course for me it's Irek and Deborah Bull's drunken pdd that's the really big highlight and it sounded like a lot of the audience thought so too.

My friend (who'd never seen classical ballet before) loved it and descibed it as "like a really good costume drama without the terrible dialogue", when she wasn't babbling insanely about how brilliant Sylvie and Irek were that is.

As I said back in April (I think!), this cast should really have been televised. Shame nobody did.
