The Daily Telegraph had a big article by Norman Lebrecht about the current Kirov ballet/opera season and Gergiev, comparing its effect with the arrival of Diaghilev and the Bolshoi in London. It also contained some eye-opening information about the sacrifices that needed to be made to secure finance for the season. Kryukov Productions deserve a major vote of thanks!

Can't find anything in the papers today, but this Telegraph piece on Stravinsky is interesting:-

The man who rescued Stravinsky

Robert Craft was more than just an assistant to Igor Stravinsky - he saw the great composer through a profound creative crisis, thus helping shape the course of modern music. He talks to Malcolm Hayes

Bruce...please check your page's linking ability!

For those interested in the official Kirov-Mariinsky website, the above link is absolutely correct. It should take you directly to the main page of the Mariinsky Theater site (both opera & ballet). Once on that page, you select either Russian or English.

Again - this link is 100% correct and, if you type-in the URL yourself, you will see that it takes you to the official Mariinsky site. - Jeannie

Jeannie, thanks very much for giving the URL of the Official Kirov website. I just visited it, and here is the direct link to the English part of the website.

http://www.mariinsky.spb.ru/eng/main.html

Interesting programmes that the Kirov is performing at home this weekend. They did La Sylphide last night, and Raymonda is on for tonight.

>Bruce...please check your page's linking ability!

Alas our systems can't cope with every error that visitors or life might chuck at us....

In this case the URL was typed in wrong - there should be two slashes in a properly specified URL.

To avoid problems like this I hardly ever type a URL... rather I bring up the page I want to tell others about and use copy to copy the URL from the little address/location window at the top - and then paste it in where I need. Result - correct URLs every time (well nearly!). Alternativley I very carefully check what I type when it really matters like this.

>Again - this link is 100% correct and, if you
>type-in the URL yourself, you will see that
>it takes you to the official Mariinsky site.

For the record I just tried typing it in as given - Netscape hates it and IE corrects it (adds in another /) and brings up the page. Few things in life are 100%...

'I only jump to express something'. Nicolas Le Riche, the hottest young dancer in France, is instrumental to the success of the Royal Ballet's revival of 'Marguerite and Armand'. Ismene Brown assesses the qualities of a man who has inherited Nureyev's mantle:

Whoops forgot to do these first thing... (not that there is much I can find)

The first season in the new House is finished, the director's quit, the press are still sniggering. Was the ROH's £200m facelift worth it? BRYAN APPLEYARD reports (Note that this is an Opera perspective rather than ballet):
