"The National Ballet of China in Copenhagen."

The National Ballet of China (Known as the Central Ballet of China in Chinese) is visiting Denmark and gave the first performance of The Red Detachment of Women on July 6 at TIVOLI, Copenhagen. We learnt from CCTV news that the opening night was very successful.

It was first time this Chinese ballet ever performed in full length in a European country. So the local audience paid great attention to it. We saw a lady said to the TV camera: it was beautiful, and Ms. Zhao Ruheng, the Director of the company smiled and said: I am glad to see so many European friends like our Chinese ballet.

The Red Detachment of Women is a Revolutionary ballet (like a story of female SPARTACUS) with powerful dances and colorful scenes. The ballet was created in 1964 under the guidance of Jiang Qing (Mao¡¯s wife who died in prison after the ¡°Culture Revolution¡±). The Chinese people like it very much.

The National Ballet of China will give 3 performances of La Sylphide/ the Yellow River (a new ballet premiered last Sep. in Beijing) on July 8 and 9 as well, and then go to Tel Aviv to take part in a Festival in Israel.

The ENB dancer Liu Shining (formerly with RB) is now having his holiday in Beijing. He told us he had met a TIMES ballet critic a few weeks ago (sorry he does not know his name) in London, and had been told he (the critic) was going to Copenhagen to see these performances. I guess he may issue a report on the newspaper. We are eager to hear more news and reports about the company.

In Hong Kong in late Aug., the National Ballet of China will perform 2 programmes - Nutcracker, and La Sylphide/Yellow River, so I look forward to seeing the company then.

   Thanks, Kevin.
Altough it's not the season for Nutcracker.

I have to make a correction about Red Detachment of Women: I just learnt from a Chinese ballet web that the National Ballet of China (formerly the Central Ballet of China) actually had performed this Ballet in a European country about 40 years ago. It was in our then friend-country Albania.

I think it was the FT critic Clement Crisp who got there - I've just found a link and put it up on the This Weeks Links page:

   Thanks, Bruce.
Liu Shi Ning is now rehearsing the Swan Lake with his partner (I forgot her name. She used to be a BRB first soloist, and now with ENB) and the Liao Ning Ballet. It was his company many years ago, and now he brought his partner back to celebrate the 20th birthday of the company. The performance will be given on Aug. 4. There will be a Gala as well. Liu and his partner will do Sleeping Beauty pdd and ACT 2 from Swan Lake.
FYI.

Sounds like Simone Clark - lovely dancer and I'm sure she must be mentioned in a few reviews... worth trying and Advanced Search!

Whoops...
Just remebered that Mionica Perego was also with BRB for a while - thats probably who it is. Silly me. And Monica is terrific - we have reviews and we interviewed her back in 1997 I think.

   Thanks.
I checked the reviews, but still not very sure if it was Simone (but I am sure it was not Mionica).
I think she is nearly 30 years old. Liu told us she had been born in Leeds and trained at the Royal Ballet School.
My friend and I had dinner with them after a performance by one of the Russian State Ballets earlier this month in Beijing. Liu says she is a quite strong dancer.
