"Coppelia"

A friend of mine wants to purchase a video of Coppelia. Can anyone recommend one please? She lives in Japan and hasn't seen the Royal's Coppelia we enjoyed here this season. Shall she wait for a video of the TV performance which took place in February ?

It exists three versions one by Australian Ballet which is very traditionnal and very fine danced. one by Kirov but it's the revisited version by Vinogradov and it's a few ridiculous. I don't know if the Royal Ballet version with Benjamin and Acosta was published because she's really intresting.
If you find the Australian Ballet version, you could buy it.

As far as I know, the Australian Ballet one was deleted (happens to all the best ballet videos, unfortunately - I'd love to get hold of Napoli and Onegin, for starters) a few years ago, although it was a great production, the most enjoyable I'd seen at the time. I hope someone might have the sense to re-issue it sometime.

As far as the Kirov version goes, the general impression I have had from reviews is that you shouldn't touch it with the proverbial bargepole. The Royal Ballet's version was good, but I've no idea whether it will actually be released commercially. Shame nobody ever thought to do English National Ballet's version, which is really bright and sunny.

You might be able to get Coppelia on the internet on www.abc.net.au. It is a good one but it is probably only available in PAL so it will not work in Japan or the USA.

BRB's Coppelia is also worth getting on video you can. Sandra Madgwick is great as Swanhilda, as is John Auld as Coppelius. Sergiu Pobereznic isn't too bad as Franz either.

Thank you all for your useful info. But is the BRB's Coppelia available ? In the Dance Books catalogue, only the Kirov's one is listed. That's why I bought it myself, but I didn't like it.

If your friend would like to buy NTSC videos of Australian Ballet's Coppelia in Japan, She/he would better ask HMV or Tower Record all over Japan. I have seen Australian Ballet Series (Coppelia, Sleeping Beauty, Nutcracker etc) recently.

You can check all the titles on the KULTUR video site
http://www.kulturvideo.com/

I recommend Roland Petit's very unique Coppelia (Karen Kaine as Swanilda and Roland Petit himself as Coppelius) it is available on Video in Japan. (DDV series which is published from SHINSHOKAN)

I think BRB's Coppelia is not on sale as purhasing version.
I love the version very much !!

Thanks for that, Hiromi, I didn't know the website existed. How much do videos cost in Japan? I could be tempted ...

**Although I have only seen still photos of this version, it should be good since Karen Kain is in it.

By the way, I have a KULTUR version of Coppelia featuring Fernando Bujones, taped live in Puerto Rico with the Ballet de San Juan. STAY AWAY from it, it is terrible. Bujones himself is technically impeccable and he is obviously trying to give his compatriots a chance to shine in this production.....

The sound is awful and the applause feel like they have been added later because they all sound the same (and as though stolen from some other show). The whole production has the feel of a high school show, very very amateur. But then, a lot of the KULTUR videos have that feel. It's a great concept, but very unequal in quality. I also have a older Kirov Swan Lake version from them (with Valery Panov as the jester), with lots of the feet simply cut out of the image....

Would you please give more information (a dealer that sell through the Internet) on how to purchase Coppelia with Karen Kain / Petit?
I have seen that performance on the TV years ago and it's magnificent!

   Patricia,
Thank you for your kind offer. Unfortunately my friend lives in Japan and the video system is different over there. However, I would love to watch the BRB's Coppelia myself as I have never seen it. I would be most grateful if you could send me your spare copy. Please E-mail me if it is OK with you.(I couldn't find your mail address.)
Thank you.

There is, sold under the CBC banner, an ancient recording of the National Ballet of Canada in Coppelia with Karen Kain in the title role and Bruhn, who himself so delightfully put the undertaking together, giving the most heartbreaking of all performances I have seen as Dr. Coppelius. Canada uses the NSTC format.
