"Natalia Makarova in Watford"

For anyone within in reach of the Palace Theatre Watford - Natalia Makarova is appearing as Elvira in Noel Coward's "Blithe Spirit" until 8th July.

She gives a super performance - well worth coming out here for if you can!

I saw the show last Thursday and on the whole it was a pretty good show with an interesting set and overall concept that was trying to escape the traditional sort of staging. I must say though that I thought Natalia was mis-cast and in the first half especially, the energy on stage seemed to drop whenever she appeared. I know the language thing is tricky but also the fact that they keep referring to the fact that Elvira died very young seems at odds with what we are seeing. In the second half it has to be said that she rises to the ocasion more and seems more at ease with the Coward one-liners though her physicallity seems a little unfocussed especially during her ghostly entrance and exit. Aparantly there is hope of a West End transfer though I am not sure the production as a whole warrants it...just an opinion !
