"The Car Man"

Not a review - There have already been lots. - Just a few thoughts after an enjoyable evening seeing AMPs latest production in Sheffield on Saturday.

There are various casts.
We saw Ewan Wardrop as Luca and Will Kemp as Angelo.
Ewan Wardrop's dancing gets better every year, and Will Kemp was wonderful as the timid and impressionable Angelo.
Michela Meazza made a pretty good Jessica Lange-type as Lana, wife of Diner owner Dino ( Neil Penlington ), and Emily Piercy was Rita - Angelo's gentle 'girlfriend'. She and Will Kemp had some of the most touching scenes.

Lez Brotherstons set was every bit as good as you'd expect ( although I agree with others that the British cars have to go ) taking the action from garage/diner forecourt to Club to prison; and Chris Daveys clever lighting deserves mention.

Act 1 was the more cohesive in terms of character portrayal and story telling with plenty of typical Bourne wit, inventiveness and action.
Act 2 is much shorter and brings things to a dramatic conclusion while leaving some questions rather unsatisfyingly unanswered. - I wonder how much revision will be made to the production.

Other casts are going to include Saranne Curtin and Vicky Evans as Lana; Scott Ambler as Dino; Arthur Pita as Angelo; and Alan Vincent and Ben Hartley as Luca. Also Will and Ewan get to swap roles.

The cast are back in London this week for further rehearsal and then back on tour to Nottingham next week and then Newcastle.

Ann: Don't know about Nottingham, but I'm going to High Wycombe on the 21st June, so I'll be interested to see if there's any obvious difference in how people feel after the extra week's rehearsal.
