"Thought for the day ?"

In the Guardian each Friday, there's a column 'My cultural life' where various celebrities describe their reading habits etc... Today's (which doesn't seem to be online) is from Anne McKevitt of Changing Rooms - here's her view on ballet:

"I'm not that keen on ballet. It's very overrated because of its expensive exclusivity. Yet on the rare occasion I go, I enjoy it, although I wish everyone would go the whole hog and dress up. They do in Australia and New York. It should be a whole theatrical event for the participants not just the people on stage. ...There was nothing around when I was growing up in North East Scotland that offered ballet, so to me there was geat illusion and grandeur attached to it. And of course I was attracted to the frocks".

Confused or what ? She thinks it's too exclusive, but we ought to dress up more. I think she should stick to decorating...

I agree - what an idiot. Mind you, with the sort of taste she has in colours, perhaps it's just as well she doesn't go to ballet much, because I dread to think what she looks like when she's "dressed up" - the dressed down is bad enough! If she just likes to look at "pretty frocks" she should stick to fashion shows, and leave the ballet seats she occupies to people who will appreciate the actual performance. After all, surely the point of going to the ballet is to enjoy the dancing first and foremost, with the set and costumes contributing to that, not the other way around. Let me add one last thing - I hope I'm not of the elitist school of thought, as I believe everyone should have the chance to access all kinds of art - music, art, sculpture, performance arts of all kinds etc. - and that more should be done to attract people into all kinds of galleries, theatres and concert halls. It's one of the reasons I support AMP, amongst other companies, as they try to bring dance/ballet to as wide an audience as they can, both by touring and with their style of show. I know some people prefer a more traditional, "purer" form of ballet, but I think there's room for both.

Disagree with her idea that only the elite go to ballet dressed up in New York, in fact we're often complaining that people don't dress up enough. Don't know where she gets that. Students and the less-well-funded types are in abundance throughout at the Met and the State Theater (though there is some grumbling as evidently the price for standing room, traditionally the place of choice if you're not on a trust fund, has gone up to $20 for ABT's current season). Anyway, she's wrong! (no mincing words, eh?)

Oh well, at least on the more positive side, a national paper which has been having rather a dig at the ROH over recent months has at least published something indicating that the ROH *doesn't* have a dress code. Now why didn't I wear my jeans and T-shirt today? ...
