"'Smithereens' by The Cholmondeleys and The Featherstonehaughs"

A very enjoyable evening as part of Spring Loaded. The show is based on a surreal version of 20's Berlin night-club culture and the combination of masks, black cat-suits, eerie lighting and inventive music provide a fine backdrop. The photo shows an amazing skirt made of fibre-optic threads. But the heart of the evening is Lea Anderson's witty and striking choreography and the quality of the dancers. Maho Ihara has great fun on stilts, including a gracious arabesque and the excellent Ragnhild Olsen has legs so long that stilts would be superfluous.

For those who haven't tried contemporary dance for a while, this startling entertainment is worth a try. It remains at The Place until 22nd April and is then on tour around the country.
