"Vidoes enquiry "

I've got a problem I'm hoping you all can help me with...

I'm planning on purchasing a ballet video but I can't decide between Mayerling, Prince of the Pagodas and Winter Dreams. I live in Australia so its very expensive to get one mailed here and since I haven't see any of the ballets before, I'd like to know which one readers would recommend.

Thanks for your help.

Well, I would have no hesitation in recommending the Mayerling video. I think it is one of the best ballet videos I have seen, and captures one of Irek's greatest roles, and, of course, his partnership with Viviana. The pas de deux are really exciting and it just such a wonderful ballet.

The Winter Dreams video is also rather lovely, but I know which I would take to my desert island.

Will be interested to see what everyone else thinks!

I would definitely go for Mayerling first, all the performances in it are good, it's a bonus to see Irek dance with Durante AND Lesley Collier.

I would then select Winter Dreams because the music is wonderful and would then forget P of P because the music is terrible and I think McMillan ran out of steam with this one.

Depends on your taste, I suppose, and whether you like your ballets to be full of rape, drug addiction, depravity and various other things for which only psychiatrists have names .

But yes, I agree I'd go for Mayerling or Winter Dreams (which obviously is a lot shorter, although it does have a good film about Mukhamedov on it with some meaty chunks of dance).
Personally, I wouldn't go for Pagodas at all.

Yes, it's very much a matter of taste. Mayerling has great music, great dancing from everyone but the subject-matter can be a bit hard to take. And it's got a lot more dancing for Mukhamedov than for any of the girls, which might be a factor for some. I find I don't watch it as often as some of my other tapes, perhaps because it can be extremely draining emotionally.

Winter Dreams is brilliant, has gorgeous music and is one of my favourite videos (this one I do watch a lot). But the big drawback here is that it's shorter than the other two - if you like a lot of ballet for your money, that is.

I like Pagodas, too, but the music is a bit modern and there are a lot of boring monkeys in the first act. However, I'd be prepared to sit through music a lot worse than this to see Darcey Bussell in such glorious form. It's a big, complicated, sometimes difficult ballet but definitely worth buying.

Hope that helps you choose. Good luck!

It me some time to get into the Prince and Pagodas. The first act is not all that great. But the second act is stunning combination of great music and dance!

I cannot wait for its return. It is one of my favorite ballets because it has the best of traditonal ballet and the originality of more contemporary works! And it lots and lots of dancing- you get your money's worth here!

I too put in a plug for Prince of the Ps. After Manon its my second most loved piece of MacMillan. And I adore the music! Act 2 is amazingly inventive stuff and I would put it all well ahead of Winter Dreams in stature, though I can understand why others push the Mayerling more.

Ophelia, I would definately have to recommend that you buy Mayerling above the other two. Prince of the Pagodas is certainly not MacMillan's best ballet (it's got an obscure narrative, non-event music and dreadful costumes)- and I'm a fellow Aussie if you think that gives my opinion any more weight! In terms of value for money, I would also have to recommend Mayerling over Winter Dreams simply because you get more ballet viewing for your money with Mayerling. I ordered my copy of Mayerling from the UK last year and I've been extremely pleased to have added it to my collection. The only problem is that the video didn't include a synopsis booklet, so you may need to get a copy of the story from elsewhere (which shouldn't be too difficult with ballet.co!).

I do not think you need a synopsis for Mayerling because the video has brief substitles describing the story as the ballet goes along. In fact this is probably even more helpful then a printed synopsis.

Winter Day Dreams has no synopsis but it is based on the Checkov Three Sisters. I personally think the ballet lacks the poignancy of the Chekov play particularly at the end.

Your video might have the story in subtitles, Eugene, but mine certainly doesn't!

That is rather surprising. My video has a brief discription of the scene at the beginning of each scene.

Also it has a long explanation of what happen to Mary Vestsera after wards.

I think it is high time we had a revival of this ballet at Covent Garden.

Ah, but who on earth would you cast in the title role? The RB's lost all its really good actor/dancers.

How about Darcey Bussell as the "heroine" and possibly Carlos Acosta as the tragic prince!

I think that Leanne Benjamin has done it before and also Sarah Wildor could do credit to this role.

As for Prince Rudolf I am not so sure! Jonathan Cope is a possiblilty or Nigel Burley.

Much as I like Manon and RandJ, I am bit tired of it and I would like a change!
