"Manon 4/4/00 eve"

Just a short note. A wonderful evening especially with Irek back. (even if understandably a little subdued). There were flowers and a standing ovation and much cheering at the end. Viv seemed very happy which made her very bubbly in the bedroom pas de deux. I was near the front and you could see that this Des Grieux was smitten. I think that Irek's recent injury prevented them taking some of the risks in the final pas de deux that we saw at the last night at the Coliseum and likewise the skids in the first two pas de deux but otherwise a lovely evening.

I was there too. As Bruce posted somewhere else, with Irek's return
the atmosphere in the theatre turned out to be something very special -
yes, there was a full of emotion and flowers all over the place.
Never before did I see such a long queue of people longing for
return tickets; enthusiastic curtain calls seemed to last forever.
By the time Viv waved and bade a farewell hundreds of fans
went tearful I suppose.

Manon is not my favourite ballet, but Viv looked perfect for the role;
her fragility and sensuous, cat-like movement seemed the most
desired quality for the role.

Sensation of the evening was Nigel Burley, who was intimidating,
humorous and dangerously attractive Lescaut. Whenever he was on stage
I couldn't get my eyes off him. I thought I finally found an ideal
Espada (for Don Q; been longing to see the ballet! ) among Royal
males, but unfortunately he was not a Royal but guest-appeared.
All I know is he is an Australian - possibly with Australian Ballet.

...lastly there's a good news! It appears Viv returns to Covent Garden
as early as November - in Ondine. That's what I heard from her after the
performance. And Irek seems to appear in the rest of the run -
at least he was pretty sure about this Saturday.

Interesting news! Why the goodbye waves at the end if she is back so soon! Another publicity stunt by Viv?

Brilliant ! But as Shirley says it seems almost like a publicity stunt by Viv. She seems always very impulsive. I was at Viv's last night and it was wonderful. The applause was incredible. I loved their performances (but then I would) and sensed a wonderful intimacy and naturalism in the bedroom pdd. Lots of good crisp dancing from the rest of the cast and a terrific drunk scene from Burley and Christina Mcdermott.

Just one quick point, Naoko, Nigel Burley is now a member of the Royal Ballet. Rather a loss for the Aust. Ballet I fear!
