Didn't go but heard that Wildor did dance and my friends who saw it said she was good!

Sorry that is all I know.

Wildor was totally wonderful. In the first act she seemed very much the dominant partner, helping Urlezaga. I have been watching this ballet since 1974 when I saw the 3rd performance. In all that time, and I believe I have seen every RB Manon ( the role not the ballet!), I have never seen the final pas de deux danced quite like this. It was like watching a broken bird dying in slow motion. Every movement taken so slowly; one held one's breath ar the agony of it. In my view she is already right up there with the best of them and will be a very great Manon. A word about Urlezaga, not one of my favourites, but here very impressive. Obviously schooled by Dowell, he suffered terribly for love and if Irek is still off on Tuesday, I rather it be he than Cope. A great afternoon.

Glad to hear that Sarah has recovered! I saw Viviana last Tuesday and I'm going to see Sylvie on Saturday. But after reading your posting, I feel I must see Sarah as well! You must have seen Jennifer Penney's Manon too. I have watched the video featuring her and Dowell over and over and Penny's Manon touches my heart everytime. I always rent this video from my local library and I tried many times to persuade the staff to sell it to me,with no success as I believe this video has now been discontinued.

Tomoko, I'm sure you can still buy the Jennifer Penney/Anthony Dowell video of Manon from Ballet Books.

I love this video version of Manon too. I've never seen a Lescaut to match David Wall's. The way he falls in the drunk scene is extraordinary; he lets himself fall backwards like a felled tree, apparently completely senseless, just breaking the fall with the palms of his hands at the very last moment. And I loved the reckless way he flung his bottle into the crowd.

Sigh. Those were the days..

I think we've had this discussion beforeand I think that the video isn't available even from Mr. Leonard in Cecil Court! I saw it when it was televised all those years ago and I would love a copy, but if it's genuinely been withdrawn then why on earth didn't the RB take the opportunity to televise one of the Viv & Irek performances? Or, as Irek's injured, a Sylvie/Jonny perofrmance (if they MUST I suppose, but you know my views so I won't harp on!)

I have a copy - if I kind find it in collection.

If it is available in the library why not borrow it and get a video company to give you a duplicate!

   Anneliese,

I actually made a request in a letter to the powers that be at ROH to televise an Irek and Viv performance. Perhaps if more of us wrote they would take more notice but I doubt it. They certainly couldn't do it this time with Irek's injury. What a shame.

If only I'd thought of that! I'm sure my friend and Friend of ROH could have drummed up a few more people in support as well! But, as you so truly and sadly say, fat lot of good it would have done us all in the end. Sadly, we saw Manon with V&I from the worst seats I've ever had at the ROH - Robin missed almost the whole act II pdd because it was in the wrong corner of the stage (he said that from the music he reckoned it was probably pretty good...) I just hope that in my absence from the office on Maternity Leave no-one's destroyed my Irek screensaver.

Certainly while watching Guillem and Cope the other night I decided that this ballet should definitely be filmed while there are so many excellent casts. Perhaps in the summer season (although obviously it wouldn't be Viv and Irek, which is a shame)?

Is Irek definitely still out of tonight's performance ? The box office said yesterday that he attended class (that was yesterday) but could not say yes or no.

That was still the position earlier today. It's likely that this is their last ever Manon (for RB if nowhere else) and if he makes it the place will be full of emotion. Or perhaps that is a bit too flowery!

Let's all think positive Bruce - Here's hoping he will dance tonight. Are you going tonight ?

   Dear Ann,

You are right, there will never be a Lescaut quite like Mr. Wall's, I have watched that video hundreds of times and it still amazes me the fluidity and naturality he has on it. That plus the fact that anything on video transmits 50% less, makes it even the more impressive. But, Do you know how many times he played that role before filming it?? Have you any idea of how much he knew of the character after doing it so many times? How to move his head, his arm, how to look? Now tell me, have you seen some of the new Lescauts?, What do you think of them?. Obviously they are not quite the same as David Wall but then again, they have not performed that role even a 20th of times he did, plus tell me, did you ever see David Wall perform that role for the first time? Would you have liked it? or would you keep saying that same thing? No one will ever be like David Wall (I wish I could have seen him dance it live!). But are you giving the rest of the people a chance?

Please forgive me if I am rude, but I hear that same litany over and over again and it makes me really sick. Simply, because we just close ourselves and then we just can't see past our nose, never ever beign able to "see" anyone else because, we think the old is better. But the old isn't here anymore, and then what are you going to do? mourn and mourn forever? ...in the case you do, then you don't know what you are missing!!

Regards.

P.S. And are you going to let a ballet like this one dissapear, just because no one will ever "be" like someone else??

Cheers.

Victor: I agree - it would be equally easy to say that no-one could ever dance The Swan/Stranger the same way as Adam Cooper. Of course they couldn't, but it doesn't mean to say that their way of doing the role is any less good or valid - look at Simon or Will
Kemp's versions - just as good, but different.

   Jane,

Precisely what I mean

What originally got me all annoyed, was that a lot of people were saying that Marguerite and Armand shouldn't be danced by anyone else but Fonteyn and Nureyev, but it is such a beautiful ballet, that it is a crime to let it "rot" in some forgotten video archive, leaving all of us, who never had the opportunity to see it, without one of the most beautiful ballets. I am very happy the RB decided to put it back into the rep.

Cheers.

Victor

I was simply lamenting the fact that no-one these days dances Lescaut with the same dangerous glamour that David Wall seemed to have (no, I never saw him dance anything as I only came to ballet after he had retired). Of course the role was created on Wall, so he had the enormous advantage of MacMillan's personal supervision while learning it.

I certainly wouldn't want this wonderful ballet consigned to the scrapheap just because the original cost weren't around to dance it!

   Dear Ann,

I know, I lament it as much as you do. I just wanted to make sure you didn't miss any good ones that might yet come.

Lescaut's role is so twisted, that so many tries are needed before understanding all the subtleties of it. Although enormously fun, it is extremely difficult and complex to portrait (not an easy role). His mood changes so many times, his mind races through every single possibility, to make the most out of every situation, his interest is above everything. I actually love that character, no, I don't identify myself with it , but it is one of the most fantastic roles ever created for ballet, and for that I will ever be grateful to Mr. MacMillan. He was a brilliant choreographer in my opinion. But I am not going to start telling again what every one knows.

Ann, I do hope you go to see it again, it does make a lot of a difference seeing it live than from a video, and you have got new people dancing it, and as I said before, you could be pleasantly surprised.

Cheers.
