Which company is currently at the cutting edge of/has done most for the image of British Ballet? The usual suspects:

ENB
RB
NBT
Scottish
AMP
BRB
Swansea Pavlov

Following on from recent discussion - what do you see as the most salient distinguishing characteristic of the English style/school?

Such as:
fast footwork
lower extensions of the legs
lyricism
narrative
musicality
restraint
pear-shaped bodies

and no doubt many others...

Thanks Susie - we will probably run with this next - but I will make a separate thread later on so that people can add further possible answers - comprehensive though yours are of course!

Thanks Jonathan - I've decided to run with one of teh two alternatives.

Of course some will say that that no company is anywhere near any ballet cutting edge! But whatever the view distinctions can be made I'm sure.

Whilst i'm not a great one for strict definitions, I am a bit puzzled at AMP qualifying as a ballet company. Mr Bourne, Laban Centre trained, seems to be in no doubt that they are a contemporary company. It will be quite entertaining if a contemporary company wins the cutting edge ballet trophy.

   What about ...
Challenges we'd like to see?

Possible choices off the top of my head (pls correct as necessary): Bussell's Swanilda, Yoshida's Manon, Benjamin's Ondine, Guillem's Lise, Bull's Nikya, Wildor's Aurora etc. (I cannot think of any frontier for Durante. Has she missed any major roles?)

You could go for feasibility or instead most unlikely combination, whether dream cast or nightmare. There is no reason to exclude non-RB / male dancers except for impossibly large possibilities, such as Adam Cooper's Spartacus (I wish) !!

Gulliem as Lise - now that is something I would love to see!!! Nothing is better then seeing my least favorite ballerina being ritually tortured on the stage.

A challenge for Durante? What about Balanchine (although she did dance Who Cares in New York in a very brief guest appearence with the NYCB)

An interesting idea, but very RB perhaps? And of course Guillem is good in everything she does!

Which decade of the last century do you think was the most creative / successful for ballet in Britain ?

At least as a question it has a finite number of answers - 50s, 60s, 70s, whatever.

Bruce, you could rephrase this as you like - in which decade did ballet reach its artistic peak, or whatever. Over to you.

Following on from some of these suggestions, if you could genetically modify dancers, whose genes would you want to create the perfect dancer? Suggestions would, I guess have to be in the following format:

Lynn Seymour's intensity
Fonteyn's musicality
Thomas Edur's nobility
Sylvie Guillem's legs
Roberto Bolle's body
etc. etc.

The result would be pretty frightening, but hey...
