""Giselle" on Arte - did anyone see?"

This is directed more at our European readers, and my apologies if it's been covered under "POB" somewhere, but I didn't notice it.

The Ballet de la Scala appeared in Giselle on the Arte channel at the end of February, with Alessandra Ferri in the leading role, and I was wondering what people thought of it. My hotel had cable/satellite, so I was able to watch it (thanks very much to whoever tipped me off that it was on), but unfortunately I was very tired and kept nodding off (not sure whether or not that should be taken as a commentary on the production!) so missed quite a bit of it. Would anyone else like to comment?

(BTW, the one thing I did notice was the presenter, apparently sitting in the stalls seats with people all round her who were totally ignoring the fact that she was doing a bilingual introduction in their midst. I'm sure they must have been "plants" - nobody could have ignored her that well if they were members of the public! Perhaps they should try putting Deborah Bull in centre stalls next time there's a live broadcast from the ROH )

This Giselle is passed in live on TV, two years ago the 8 may. But I think they pass the film maked after the representation and not the direct because Ferri made a little mistake in the act one variation. It's not the same version at POB even she seems too.
The stage is not the same and the dress not too. Bart changes a few the choreography for Scala Ballet. If I remember he makes a ppd in the first acte between Giselle and Albrecht which doesn't exist in the parisian version which is more useful with just Peasants pdd even the libretto by Adam says that Giselle and Albrecht have a pdd in the first act.
I must say I'm not enjoyed by Ferri and Murru performance, they fine dance but it miss something to Murru, I think it's the less of experience he was very young, and Ferri deceived me. I enjoyed against by Bolle and Seabra

The original (live) version served as a pilot experiment in satellite broadcasting. It was shown throughout Europe on various arts channels that very evening. As with any true live broadcast, a little filler segment was shown during intermission, including footage from rehearsals, historical footage (P. Bart dancing Albrecht, Nureyev and Fonteyn, Yvette Chauviré, etc.) and some "impressions" from the artists themselves.

The more recently broadcast version is a mix of several live performances and has since been put on the market. I recognised several scenes from the "original" version, but, as Catherine pointed out, Ferri's "mistake" (not enough hops on pointe...) had magically disappeared. Another mistake from the last pas de deux (Murru visibly stumbling backward as he lifted Ferri high above him) was also gone. I found Ferri quite moving, but Murru was a bit immature for the role.

should have left the mistake in - most famous american one was the live telecast of romeo and juliet in which kevin mckenzie played romeo to makarova's juliet and in the tomb scene rushed out to grieve over her body in his slowly falling down sweatpants...if one didn't tape that while it was on, it was of course never shown again...(1988

I saw that program on TV too. Unfortunately, there
was a football match of the French national team on the same evening on another channel, and my family's VCR was not available, so I had to beg so that my dad accepted to have a look at "Giselle" from time to time: it was something like "and Zinedine Zidane gives the ball to Youri Djorkaeff"- peasant pas de deux- "Didier Deschamps has the ball- bit of a variation"- etc.
Fortunately, I could see the whole second act.

I found that production quite nice, the sets, costumes and lights were pleasant. I didn't find Ferri and Murru extraordinary, but both were nice (and Murru has a nice line). And there's so little ballet on TV that was happy to see it!

I'm sure Stuart Cassidy will be greatly comforted by that - at least *his* sweats didn't fall down! (see his entry under Links if you've no idea what I'm talking about).
