Poll: Which critic do you most trust?

5 March 2000

Well a pretty emphatic result as far as Clement Crisp is concerned anyway - more than twice the number of votes of the nearest competition. Sad then that the Financial Times web site in its fresh new garb has seen fit to rob us of his reviews on-line.

One suspects he is liked so much because of his marvelously bitchy comments at times - they must be a hard cross to bear for artists and others at times, but they are a good read I'm afraid, and more to the point usually spot on.

For the others its worth noting that the question was not which is your favourite critic, merely who do you most trust. Take heart then because the result may well have been entirely different if visitors were asked the more obvious question. And then again...

   Hmmm...
Methinks this poll shows as much where people read their dance reviews as what they think of the reviewers' opinions perhaps?

I can't believe that as many as 4.9% trust Anne Sacks opinion! Perhaps they are being perverse. The person I most trust is actually Mary Clarke, and then Clement Crisp. It is interesting that most of us trust the older critcs. I think Clement Crisp has been writing on dance for about 50 years!

The point made by Caz makes sense but I am surprised that The Financial Times is so widely read in this community.
Apart from the top two or three there are some odd results e.g Allen Robertson got a meagre one vote and yet I find his writing extremely good. People can always vote for themselves and doing this plus the help of a few friends could account for some strange totals.

I think that a fair few people see the FT at work and also the Crisp reviews were electronically availble until 3 weeks ago. Also the number of people who vote is about 5-10% of those who visit and one suspects it's the commited 5-10% who go out of their way to read as many reviews as they can...

I'm not surprised by the first 2 results, though I thought they may have been closer. If you get two strong contenders then the lesser slots can be reliant on only 1 or 2 votes and I would not put so much credance on such lower rankings

The only surprise to me was the Anne Sacks vote perhaps. Of all the critics peopel talk about she is normally mentioned the most...

I personally find Clement Crisp a bit too forgiving on some dancers/performances - particularly the Bolshoi.

But his knowledge on this subject is not in doubt.

Crisp's recent review about Guillem in M&A was interesting to read. Has he finally changed his opinion about her ? Anyway, I like reading his reviews as well as Percival's.
MD at my work gets a copy of FT every day. Last week he kindly allowed me to cut out the review and the photograph of beautiful Guillem as Marguerite from the paper. But he first thought I was checking my shares !
