"A wonderful debut..."

...by Sarah Wildor in Coppelia last night. With fine performances also from Stiefel as Franz and Jaime Tapper as Dawn, the whole ballet came to life again!

I saw Sarah as well. Dramatically Sarah is better cast then Leanne Benjamin but Leanne as the edge in the pure dancing parts as she is technically stronger.

I thought Jaime Trapper was superb as Dawn - considerably better then the dancer on Saturday and on Feb.

I think that De Valois Coppelia is a well acted and dramitcally conceived ballet. However I think it does lack the fizz and ebulliance of both Peter Wrights BRB production or the ENB version. The simple sets are charming but could be brighter and more interesting. They do not capture the magical balletland atmosphere which is appropriate for this ballet.

The main disappointment was the very leaden tempo chosen by the conductor.

I know that Jamie comes from Canada but I have not seen her wearing a Davy Crocket hat.

As a Canadian citizen I must advise caution as to what you are saying about Canada. I lived in Canada as a teenager and very wisely became a citizen.

Canadians are quite sensitive to jokes about the "great white north" etc

"Its grim up north" jokes take on a very different meaning there as it really is Grim up there - extremely cold and barren. A TV news group played an April Fools Joke on a goverment ministry by asking staff to comment on late breaking news that the ministry was moving from cosmopolitan Toronto to Cobalt, Northern Ontario as job creation scheme! It is about as desirable as moving the RBallet School from Barons Court the Shetland Islands.

I think the David Crocket anology is more appropriate to Ethan Stieffal who is..... an American (gasp!)

Look at what you typed Eugene.

The lady's name Tapper not Trapper. Perhaps now you understand the reference the the hat.

   It was a nice night.

Wildor is such a fine actress and her attention and naturalness reminded me much of Jayne Regan (who I would rate as probably the best ballet actress in the country). For such fine dramatics one can forgive teh odd Wildor technical transgression. Very different to Yoshida's performance - but I love that as well. If I could only see one I'd be very torn.

I'm not sure about the Stiefel and suspect I might be a couple of years behind everybody else in celebrating his work - as I seem to be with Jane Burn! He is technically incredibly good, but as a personality he just doesn't move me.

Trapper Tapper was excellent!

   Trapper Tapper...

A slight confusion over names no doubt. As the dancer is Canadian it is natural that I instinctively confuse Tapper with Trapper! After all Fur trapping is a very Canadian attribute! There still a lot of beavers over there waiting to be trapped...poor devils!!

Better say more or the Canadian government will revoke my citizenship and the animal rights group will put a price on my head!
