""Giselle" productions"

I've been looking for a really good "Giselle" production on video to give to a friend named after the ballet (but she's never seen it, and i want her first time seeing it to be a good time). I know that you, on the website, the critics have recommended the Royal Ballet Theatre's Fall 1997 live production real high, as well as the ABT video performance with Fracci, and Bruhn. However, I cannot find these videos in the States where I live. Even on the internet it is very hard to find these productions. I was wondering if you could give me a website or point me in the direction to a place where I could buy this video. Also if any one could recommend any other good "Giselle" video productions out there that I might be able to find easier. For example, is the 1977 Nureyev "Giselle" a good production? I think the costumes hold me back from it. I would really appreciate any feedback, thanx a lot and God bless.

The 1996(?) La Scala production of Giselle with Alessandra Ferri and Massimo Murru is quite good (although Murru doesn't grab me) and is available on video. There are also Kirov and Bolshoi versions available on video but they're a little average. Being an Aussie I'm also obliged to mention that the Australian Ballet has a production of Giselle on video which is quite good. All these videos are available in the VHS PAL format, but they may not be available in the American format(the AB production definately isn't).

Dance Books should be able to help you with most of these videos and the AB's Giselle is available via the Australian Broadcasting Corporation's (ABC) website.

I would agree about the la Scala production. I have the Nureyev/Seymour video but personally I find is a bit false and staged. It is a studio filming rather than stage. If your froind has not seen the ballet before she may find the quantity if Nureyev's make up off putting.

PS - Caitlyn - I also like the Australian version

if it is still in print (i'm not sure) the video from television of giselle with makarova and baryshnikov is a good introductory one. it features martine van hamel as myrtha and was part of the "dance in america' or 'live from lincoln center' series and was filmed in 1977.

I've owned the ABT production from the late 1960's with Carla Fracci and Erik Bruhn for a long time and it's still my favorite Giselle video (I've also seen Makarova/Baryshnikov which is WONDERFUL and the Kirov production with Mezentseva and Zaklinsky, which is okay). It's filmed in a studio and they did some pretty strange things with camera angles at times, but, for me at least, Fracci IS Giselle, and Bruhn is amazing, as well (I like this version of the peasant pas de deux a little better than the Kirov's, too).

For Giselle it depends if you want an historic version or a modern version. I think the ABT video with Fracci and Bruhn is fine but it's a film and it's not the stage.
The Scala's version is modern but I don't find Ferri too grest she could be and murru is just fine. Against Bolle in pas de deux is really good.
Kirov version is very traditionnal but it's a good version. I don't know Makarova and Baryshnikov version if someone could make me a copy thanks you.
I know also the Creole Giselle by Harlem dance theater. It's special but Virginia Johnson is good.
I never seen Australian Ballet too if someone could make me a copy I'm interess by.
It don't exist any POB version but the Scala version is very near the POB version in fact Bart staged the two versions.

The Scala version with Ferri happened to be on French TV last night and I must say that I was quite convinced by Ferri who is really a lovely dancer. I thought the corps looked quite good too. I am looking forward to seeing Ferri in Carmen in a few weeks time.
A question to our British friends : what was she like in her RB days?

I really like the Bolshoi's video of Giselle - specially the second act. The ABT one is good as well though.
You can find several versions of the ballet on NTSC VHS format if you put Giselle into the search under video and DVD on www.amazon.co .... and you get the discount!
