   Marie,

Thanks you so lot for the information about Jean-Guillaume Bart. I think after his spleeping Beauty is one of the best dancers of the Opera. He's a prince, he has technic, musicality, he's not really acting, but he dance very fast.

Susy, thanks for the info about Jean-Guillaume Bart. Do you know with which company he'll be dancing? The Aterballetto, the company MaggioDanza?

I agree with Catherine that Jean-Guillame Bart is
one of the best dancers of the Opera. His dance is
very very clear, and it is rare nowadays. I think it is one of the most important thing in the
classical ballet because it helps to preserve the
high level and the traditions.
I like Elisabeth Platel, too, and I am sad that
she retired. Could anybody tell me what does she
doing? I have read yours letters that she was in
Tokyo. Will she dance in Paris in the future?

   Dear Suzy

Theorically, Platel must dance Raymonda at the end of the season. I believe she makes two performance one in this season and one the next season when it gives again Raymonda at the beginning od Saison I think.
I don't really know what she makes just she danced in Japan with Loudières and LEgris.

She was with the groupe of Legris.(Tokyo, Jan.28-30.) She danced a pas de deux from "Magnificat"(ch.Neumeier) with Yann Saiz(boo...)and pas de six from "Raymonda" act 2.
Oh, she was sooo good! How could one say she was a "retired" dancer....!?

Platel is retired from Opera because she's 40 years old and it's the legal age for retirement for dancer. It's silly I agree with it but it's like that it's like Loudières who must left Opera three years ago.
But she must dance Raymonda at the end of the Season

   Tomja,

Your "boo" after Saiz must be interpret like it's a bad dancer. If it's that I completely agree with you. And if you want to know, he would certainly become the next "Premier danseur" because Lefèvre loves too many this dancer like Belingard. I don't think these twice dancers are symbolist of "Ecole française" or if it's a new "Ecole française". It's really sad for us. I hope some dancers like Jean-Guillaume Bart will appear in the next years

   Catherine , voyez-vous d'autres danseurs représentatifs de "l'ecole française"?Je pense notamment à Guislaine Fallou...

Do you see other dancers representative of this "école française"?I thought about Guislaine Fallou...

Tomja , I suppose you are japanese. Can you understand us in french? In fact I ask you that question because I know that quite a lot of japanese people learn french and like french culture.Anyway since you are a "Paris Opera fanatique" I recommend you to watch out for Nicolas Paul , my favorite young dancer with Nicolas Le Riche.

   Marie,

Well, this is a message to those of you having this wonderful conversation about the POB...I would really love to be a part of this conversation...but unfortunately, I understand and read just a little bit of french....I would be extremely happy if we could talk about all of this in English?! I don't mean to be rude here or anything, but I am an POB fanatic as well and would like to learn more about the dancers with you....
Thanks,
Terry
*By the way, I went to see the Jeune Ballet de France today (in NYC) and they did some contemporary dance pieces, which I thought were rather fresh. How is the actual reputation of JBF in France? (I mean, I understand that they are a very young company....)

I completely agree!
I think there are fans of POB all over the world.
The JBF was formed in 1983. Here is their homepage: http://www.j-ballet-fr.org

Catherine,
You have wrote Yann Saiz will be appointed this
annual concour, because B. Lefevre likes him.
The jury consists of 10 or 12 members, as I know.
Do you think that Lefevre has such a great
influence?

I try to speak english but I put french commentary because it's difficult for me with a miss of english vocabulary.
The 1st commentary is for Mary, I find her hard with Balanchine, because it's a most important choreograpf like Robbins and I love their ballets which are for me some Jewels.
It's true that in France, People swear only by contemporay dance and find classical dance updated. I prefer classical ballet but I love too Neo-classical ballets. Neumeier, Balanchine, Robbins are not bad for the "Ecole française".

For the Lefevre comment, I saw till she loved someone she distributed him in every ballets even the ballet is not for him like Pech in Sleeping Beauty. Saiz was "remplaçant" on Sleeping Beauty.
It's all the contrary of a classical dancer. Lefèvre chooses for Gall and BArt is like a little dog before her. He doesn't make nothing against her even he hasn't the some advice. When you speak to dancer they said, if they decided to promote someone, they made it.

I don't know really JBF, i just saw their TV program about classical piece as Talisman, Halte de cavalerie, and so on.
What do you thnik about POB dancers, Which are you preference in kind of Ballets, Which ballets do you see by POB? And what do you thnik about POB Ccompany.

   Terry,

I have never seen the Jeune Ballet de France on stage, only on TV, like Catherine. They tour a lot in France, mostly in very small cities which seldom see other dance companies. As far as I know, the main purposes of the company seem to be: 1) giving a first professional experience to young dancers, 2) doing a pedagogical work towards the audience (their programs often include an "historical part" with excerpts of some famous ballets of the repertory: Romantic ballets, Ballets Russes period, etc.), especially in small cities where people have little opportunity to see other dance performances, and also outside France, and 3) collaborating with young choreographers to create new works. It seems to be a rather special company; since the dancers are very young and unexperienced, and change very year, it can't be judged with the same standards as a real professional company... Some previous members (like Fernanda Tavares-Diniz, or a Cuban dancer whose name I have forgotten) sometimes join the company again for some galas.

I've read interviews by Robert Berthier, their director. He said that a few decades ago, when there were very few contemporary dance companies in France, he was mostly interested in helping contemporary dance, but now, there are hundreds of active contemporary dance companies, and so he's more interested in the preservation of the classical repertory.

JBF has a very clever politics. They go to the
international ballets competitions and "pick up"
the young talents. So they have a lot of excellent
and trained dancers.
I can say I am a fan of traditional classical
ballet. But a very good classical ballet spectacle
needs a lot of things:excellent soloist,high level
in the corps de ballet, a great ensemble, rich
scenery and costumes, good orchestra. It's very
difficult and I think POB has all these things.

Estelle, the Cuban dancer of the Jeune Ballet de France whom you mentioned may be Yat Sen Chang, now a principal of English National Ballet who had danced for a year with the Jeune Ballet de France before joining ENB in 1993. According to the ENB programme notes, Chang was invited in 1992 to the International Dance Festival of La Baule in France, and then he joined the JBF which toured a lot of countries in Asia that year.

Well, POB dancers....there's lots to say!!! I honestly think POB is DEFINATELY the best ballet company in the world...the quality of the dancers
(esp the male dancers!!!), choreography, set design, etc. -- everything is superb. I've seen quite a few POB dancers in gala festivals that they've held in Japan...For example, the one M. Legris did two years ago with Loudieres... There isn't anyone I "particularly" think is the best because many of them exhibit fine qualities...However, I've also noticed that recently, the young dancers look all the same, no one "strikes" me in a unique/original way, as MC Pietragalla did, in some of her contemporary (her"Don't Look Back" was exciting!!!) and classical works as well. As with the other etoiles, such as Letestu, in a lot of ways, I can only see her as the "Guillem #2"....(I understand I'm being a little harsh here...) With A. Dupont, I feel that she needs more warmth in her use of expression; I thought she was often a bit "cold." But yet again, these dancers continue to develop and mature, so if I see them at this moment, they might exhibit qualities I haven't noticed before. Also, I recently saw Emilie Cozette dance "Grand Pas Classique." But for me, she was too young and inexperienced -- she lacked impact and fluency in her movement. Still, she is young and I do believe that she presents some very elegant, classical qualities (She does seem to be a very "French" dancer). Well, there is SOOOOO much more I would like to say but I have to run to a class!! (I'm a college student in NYC...)

Terry I want to ask the same question than Marie when and where did you see Grand pas classique with Cozette, How you speak about Japan gala, did you see her in Kyoto and if it's the case what do you think about his partner.
Emilie Cozette is young it's true, but she dances with a great maturity for her 18 years. She danced the 6th fairy in Sleeping Beauty and she was absolutely wondeful.
For english balletomanes, what do you think about Hallé who was guest étoile during one year at the ENB. I hope she danced best than in Opera because, it's not an excellent ballerina. She's beautiful, but she looks cold and technic miss to her.

Yes I think it would be nice if somebody could tell us what they think about Muriel Hallé who guested one year with ENB.
Terry , I agree with Catherine.Emilie Cozette is talented and quite mature for her age.She is one of the up-coming talent of the Opera.

To the POB discussion group (!!!)
Well, I saw Emilie Cozette in a Kyoto Dance School (Arima Ryuko Ballet) performance last summer with Christopher Duquenne...He was a good dancer but didn't leave me with a striking impression as M. Legris did. Emilie danced a romantic ballet (music by Chopin, but I forgot the title of the piece...sorry) and of course, the masterpiece: "Grand Pas Classique." I didn't mean to say she was a bad dancer at all...I completely agree with the fact that she does show some great potential as one of the future etoiles of the Opera...As for the actual performance that I saw, I was greatly touched by her usage of arms...it's hard to describe in words but she used her upper body exquisitely -- she was/still is a very "classical"/"romantic" dancer. I will be looking forward to her performances in the near future...
I guess with the "Grand Pas Classique," I've been sort of "brainwashed" with Sylvie Guillem's performance. Because her image of "Grand Pas Classique" (the new version in which she dances it wearing a black tutu and a red wig-- she completely revolutionized it!!!!)is too strong, it's difficult for me to see other dancers possessing the same caliber... but again, I'm sure my opinion is completely debatable. There was one other question I wanted to ask: I heard that this one Japanese dancer named Fujii Miho made it as an apprentice to the POB...Does anyone know anything about her? I'd be very interested to know what kind of dancer she is and whether she possesses any potential for the future, since I have never even heard of her in Japan.

I only saw Hallé in one Balanchine role with ENB, and I think we were impressed with her. But she wasn't guest principal, only a soloist, I think.
