"Maximova and Vasiliev"

I have a catalogue from an exhibition I saw by the Russian artist Pyotr Belov. The paintings show images of oppression in Russia from 1930 to 1980.

One is of the Bolshoi dancers Maximova and Vasiliev bound by barbed wire. I've seen some lovely film of Maximova dancing, but don't know the background to this image. Can anyone shed any light on the matter?
