"Rojo and Ramos in Coppelia"

I saw a nice Coppelia from ENB this afternoon - you'd expect Rojo to be good, but Yosvani Ramos could be quite a find. He's another Cuban, and very young - only about 20 I think - he has a natural charm, a good clean technique, and he looks good with Rojo.

Yes, I was intending to post something about this, as I saw them doing the rehearsal on Thursday. I liked Ramos' characterisation very much - trouble is, he could do with dampening down the personality a bit when he's doing the corps de ballet stuff. I saw him in a supporting role the other night, and he was almost distracting me from the principals.

How did you find Tamara? She looked a bit too solemn for the role in rehearsal, I thought.

LAST EDITED ON 21-Jan-00 AT 07:14 AM (GMT)

Yosvani Ramos took the junior men's silver at
Jackson when Sorabia took the gold. He's an
amazing bundle of charm, and projection. The
story was going around Jackson that he was a street kid who literally wandered into a ballet
class in some city outside of Havana and stayed.
He danced, I think, briefly with Le Jeune Ballet
de France, and I didn't know he had gone on to
the English National Ballet.

The number of good Cubans dancing at Jackson was
quite amazing. They have a quality of belief and
comportment combined with a definitely sensual
fullness in execution and stage presence. Most
of the contemporary numbers they danced were real
expositions of rock, semi-nudity and an interesting exploration of masculinity and the
audience, particularly the competitors, just whooped it up from the balcony.
