Yosvani Ramos took the junior men's silver at
Jackson when Sorabia took the gold. He's an
amazing bundle of charm, and projection. The
story was going around Jackson that he was a street kid who literally wandered into a ballet
class in some city outside of Havana and stayed.
He danced, I think, briefly with Le Jeune Ballet
de France, and I didn't know he had gone on to
the English National Ballet.
The number of good Cubans dancing at Jackson was
quite amazing. They have a quality of belief and
comportment combined with a definitely sensual
fullness in execution and stage presence. Most
of the contemporary numbers they danced were real
expositions of rock, semi-nudity and an interesting exploration of masculinity and the
audience, particularly the competitors, just whooped it up from the balcony.
