Poll: At the reopened Royal Opera House are you paying more or less for the equivalent seats you had pre-closure?

3 January 2000

Not much analysis to be done here. Contrary to what was promised none of those who voted has seen their seat prices go down in the reopened Opera House. Indeed the vast majority have only seen their costs go up. At best 1 in 4 of us have not seen our seat prices change.

Was it really meant to be the case that the most loyal fans should spend more and the corporate entertainers, and wealthy, less?

I cannot comment on the elimination of reduced price tickets for restricted view but I would like to share some thoughts about ticket prices overall.

The best seats ROH cost 60 this compares to about 420FF in Paris. At the current exchange rate that works out to be 42. So it is nearly 50% more expensive to watch ballet in the UK. But this is slightly misleading because the Euro (which is what the French Frank is pegged to is) has fallen by about 16%. It is very likely that the Euro will recover all its lost ground next year according to most Economists (particularly against the British pound which is seriously over valued). At a 16% appreciation French tickets will cost 49. This is much closer to UK prices and almost identical to weekend prices.

What I am saying is that prices of ballet tickets in England are pretty good given the fact that state subsidies are far lower in England then in France.

It is the opera that is very expensive in the UK. Best tickets for opera in France are about 67. The equivalent price in England is 150. This is a 123% increase. I think this disproves the view that opera subsidies ballet.

(please note for simplicity sake I have chosen to compare the best seats at the the highest tarrif band for both houses. Sometime later I might review ticket prices at amphitheatre level seats)
