There is an article in the Standard about ticket pricing. The author says that ballet tickets are cheaper and there have been no complaints. (!!!)

Interesting Standard article, except that, with a 50% increase in rear amphitheatre prices I really can't agree with their claim that ballet is cheaper. (Nor the fact that Gawain is far more expensive than last time (it was at ballet prices last time round), nor the fact that you "cheap" tickets for Alagna and Gheorgiu are £20 more expensive than their last outing... need I go on?)

The reduction in price bands probably results in cheap semi-restrcted view seats disappearing. This is a serious blow for those balletomanes who are going primarily to see a particular dancer or cast.

What the ROH have also done is reduce the price of the ultra expensive seats on gala nights. E.g the top price for the Miestersingers of Nuremberg in the 1997 season was £290. But that was for only one performance - the final one of the season. The normal price was £150 which just happens to the same price for Miestersinger this year. As a result there is no real change. But there is a superficial change which the journalists have fallen for.

As far as I can remember -the bulk of the amphitheatre seats were £50/£25 for opera and ballet respectively. Now it is £70/£35. This is for weekday performance. I cannot comment on weekend performances.

It's also very misleading in that they quote the top price for ballet as £45, whereas for all full-length pieces it's £60.

And the quoted ballet price is for a Friday night, which is a little cheaper than the other weekdays. Does anyone know why the weekend tickets are now cheaper? I've come across this type of pricing at other venues, but where Friday and Saturday evenings are more expensive, not cheaper!

I think that weekends are cheaper because they can't flog the seats to the corporate suits for silly money at weekends. It's very nice for us provincial folks with long and expensive train journeys that can only really be done at weekends!

A simple solution to the controversy over ticket price is for the ROH to prepare a Revenue per Night Statement.

Assume every seat is sold , now calculate the gross receipts per night for the same kind of performance in 1997 and 2000 (same kind of ballet, opera and NO gala nights) If the gross receipts are higher in 2000 after an allowance for the 100 extra seats then we can assume that ticket prices have risen overall. No spin can obsfucate that fact.

But even if the receipts are the same there still has to be answered the question that only the best seats have had prices slashed. Also whether the discount for semi-restricted seats have been abolished.

   >Also whether the discount for semi-restricted
>seats have been abolished.

Small point but I don't think the term discount works well here.

To me discount implies that you are getting something of value at a cheaper price than normal. And people normally feel happy when they are told of a discount. Ultimately I'd expect ROH management to talk about these restricted view tickets being discounted because it grossly flatters the position.

Restricted view seats need to be priced according to the view you get. They should be cheaper because the view is worse.
