Poll: Is design an integral and necessary part of the dance 'experience'?

13 December 1999

Perhaps the results may not be a surprise to most visitors, but I'm surprised that there was not a more emphatic vote for design being integral to all ballet and dance.

In a way I think its all rather axiomatic: dancers have to wear something and that something needs design - even the use of practice clothing is a design choice. And of course practice clothes vary.. so which practice clothes? And with design choice comes the ability to influence thoughts on the choreography....

Bruce, the only thing I disagree with is 'dancers have to wear something'; but when they don't, of course, it's even more of a design statement!

Yes, and also the lighting (or lack of) is a design choice too!

Obviously I have touched a raw nerve with Bruce over my supposedly disdainfull view of design. Otherwise there would be no mini-poll on this and a " comment" postings

Actually I never said that design does not matter - it is just that I am a great fan of the minmalist approach to design as exemplified by the NYCB.

Moreover I am beginning think that I place a much greater emphasis on music then design.

But I do believe that there are far too many over designed productions - particularly with the Royal Ballet - especially Swan Lake which is in a class of its own! The Designs are distracting and take away from the dance.

For what its worth a few people have asked me to put up the results, and the associated words, for wider comment - it just so happens this is the first time I've figured out how to do it! It should now happen regularly.

But you are right that a debate about design did spin-off a mini-poll - the way it should be I think.
