...and the most expensive. As tickets go on sale for the Royal Opera House's new season, one outraged fan says it's still the same old bastion of elitism - and challenges chief executive Michael Kaiser to sit in the cheap seats:

Do have a look at the item in the Guardian, the outraged opera fan's letter to Kaiser about seat prices and access.

If you substitute the opera references for ballet, I would agree with every word - all this spin about ticket prices being reduced just isn't true. Prices for the cheaper seats have gone up and it is the faithful fans who have supported the company through thick and thin who are expected to stump up.

I couldn't agree more, Lynette, even though I haven't read the article in question. Somebody show me these "reduced" prices? A 200% increase on upper slips, 50% or more on the rear amphitheatre for ballet, and I'm sure the top price seats for Manon have gone up since last time as well. Not to mention, on the opera side, the fact that last time Alagna and Gheorghiu appeared (in La Traviata) you could get rear amphi for 29, whereas now it's 50!

There is an article in Private Eye Christmas Edition concering the cock-up over the opening season cancellations.

The program was devised by Nichalas Payne the opera director. There were too many productions and in the case of Grand Macabre was far to demanding technically. This the second major error by Nicolas Payne - his produticon on MacBeth had to be cancelled in the last season at ROH because of technical problem and insufficient rehearsal.

He left ROH to join ENO. I think he would (or at least should) of been sacked for this. Now he has the effrontery to critize the ROH from the safety of his ENO home.

It is common sense for any new venue to have a run in time. Also the program for opear was absurdly esoteric particularly in the first period. We have an unknown Rossini Opera, a tuneless Grand Macabre and Gewain (I am sure it is very good but is hardly a crowd puller) and relatively sophisticated Verdi opera and a rarely performed Mozart Opera.

So much for accessability!!
