"ABT Corsaire video"

Popped into Dance Books today to discover they have the new ABT Corsaire video in stock. The male cast is good (Stiefel, Corella and Malakov), but the lead female is someone I've never heard of, Julie Kent. It's quite expensive, 18, so Ididn't yet buy. Does anyone know if Julie Kent is any good?

JULIE KENT any good? She is a leading principal with the ABT. She won the Erik Bruhn prize in 1992 (competition amoungs the ABT, NBC, Royal Ballet and Royal Danish Ballet) beating out Sarah Wildor.

She has a very dreamy elegant style and is very lyrical. I was mesmerized by her pdd in "The Leaves are Falling" However she is not very strong. As well as being very thin she is very beautiful.

She would not would my first choice for La Corsaire as she looks too frail and vulnerable.

The ABT Corsaire is superb. It was done tounge in cheek with a lot of humour. This in contrast to the rather embarrassing irony-free production by the Kirov!

I have seen Julie Kent as Medora on stage, but not the video yet. She is sound, serene but not stunning.

The cast overall is however very good. The video is probably expensive because Dance Books have to import it via Austria. Personally, I do not mind paying the extra when David L hasmade the effort.

I saw July Kent danced a Swan Lake about 4 years ago at the Met NY,but couldn't enjoy it very much(V.Malakhov was her partner). She was alreday ABT principal at that time. She worked with M.Barishnikov in the film "Dancers'(as a girl of Corp de ballet) about 12 years ago.

A summer season of dance, Cath? A grand total of two ballets on TV? The ROH Gala was half opera anyway! I'm not sure if the ABC intend to screen any more ballet performances during the Sunday Stereo Specials. Nevertheless, I thought Le Corsaire was sensational, especially the performance by Corella! Julie Kent is indeed slim and fragile looking, but she danced marvellously. I first saw her in the ppd from Cruel World in the ABT's New York Gala on video, so her role in Le Corsaire made quite a contrast.
