"Pointe Shoes Beetles"

Viewers of Wednesday's gala may recall mention of a beetle that infests pointe shoes. If anyone can supply me with specimens together with an infested pointe shoe I can offer costs and a modest reward. Please contact by e-mail before sending. jafowler@dmu.ac.uk

I'd just like to point out that ballet.co mentioned this very phenomenon in connection with pointe shoes over a year and a half ago in the interview with Marian Padina, who was the Royal Ballet's shoe person at that time.

Weevils infested the flour used for the papier mache, and until EU intervention, cyanide was used to kill the larvae. Now it's done with heat.

Try http://www.ballet.co.uk/may98/interview_marian_padina.htm for a fascinating read (ends self-publicity)

Jenny, thanks for pointing this out (no pun intended). So, where can I get some?

Since you're asking, my advice would be to contact the pointe shoe departments of a couple of companies, and maybe try Freeds direct.

Jenny, yes that sounds like a very good idea, thank you. I'll leave it for the next Millenium now. They must surely be a pest of other things as well (does papier maché really contain flour? - I imagined it was the nutritious glue they'd be munching), but I can't run them down. Even taking into account the genetic flexibility of beetles, and their readiness to adapt to fill vacant ecological niches, it is hard to see that they could have done that in the time that pointe shoes have been about! Sounds like a promising little project for a student.

Traditionally, papier mache is made with flour and water paste. But I'd have thought that the shellac used to harden pointe shoes would have done for most weevilly things.

Jim, are you serious about this? I may be able to help.
I used to keep shoes in which I had done the first performance of a special role, but over the years they all succumbed to the evil weevil and with sadness I binned them. I now have just one pair left, spectacularly pockmarked with what looks like woodworm pinholes, which I keep simply for the gleeful and fascinated horror that it affords my children...
