Thank you to those who have contributed some thoughts.... and saved me from despair!

I suggest that we have a poll of current Juliets and that some other time we have an all time greats for Juliet. In fact this would be a logical way to go on for all dancer/role polls like this.

So we will poll for the best of the current Juliets. And at the moment we have Yohsida, Guillem, Zamora, Madgwick for sure. Does Ferri still dance Juliet?

Now if you assume that I'm a complete and utter brainless idiot (which I probably am for doing this stuff) who else would we add to the list for people to vote for?

The other thing I'm undecided about is if this should be a UK only list or a worlds best list. What do you think? Perhaps we can have a poll for the UK and then a world poll (of current Juliets)?

Shame - she is not in this poll and I don't realy want to start it again now. It kind of underlines the potential usefulness of asking for people to come up with names - left to my own devices I can't be trusted!

This is all rather new still, but I think it would be nice to regularly ask readers to come up with the options for poll's. Hopefully next time teh question will be clear from day one as well. And I like Sarah too (though not quite as much as some of the others!)

How about which dancers were the best in certain roles - eg who was the best Juilet, who was the Lise, who was the best Petruska (sp?) or how was hthe best Ashton Dancer, or MacMillian Dancer or Balanchine Dancer

How about which company has the best corp de ballet?

How about what is the all time favourite Ballet?

How about which ballet would most people like to see revived?

Any of these any good

Thanks Nicola - all godd ideas (but don't let that put teh rest of you off!)

The Juliet one might well be nice for next. Now because of the way our Mini-poll works we have to come up with all teh alternatives. So what dancers would we put in the Juliet poll? Perhaps half the fun in this is making sure that we have the right list!

Although this has not been stated all the suggestions would appear to refer to the MacMillan version. If the intention was to embrace all versions I think that Galina Ulanova would rank very high in the opinion of those who saw he.

The complete list of possibilities for the Juliet poll are:

Miyako Yoshida

Miyako Yoshida

Miyako Yoshida

Miyako Yoshida

Miyako Yoshida

and

Miyako Yoshida

I think that covers all the realistic contenders.

Are we talking current performers only or are past masters to be included? If so, my Juliet vote goes to Lynn Seymour for whom the role was created (even though Fonteyn performed it first). If we are talking only contemporary performers, don't neglect ABT dancers, as they have the same production.

Felursus, which ABT dancers should be included?

I have a vague memory that there's some tall girl at the Royal who's done it as well, but I can't remember her name.

It's most definitely not a question of my view Jim - the Juliet list was the feedback from readers.

It won't always be this way but on this occasion I thought it would be good to get readers to contribute. Postings and ballet.co is not about us tap-dancing for everybody all of the time. If folks want the facilities they need to use them...

And thanks for Sylvie. She will be added to the list tomorrow, along with hopefully very many others...

No, didn't quite mean it like that

I meant it figuratively, and ought to have said "Whatever one's views....."

Btw, it's very nice to be able to correct typos in this new system

If we are going back in time my personal favourity must be Marion Tait.
However if we are only nominating current dancers then Monica Zamora gets my vote followed by Sandra Madwick. All are BRB dancers, but I know Monica at least has performed in London recently.
Thanks for the updating.

   >Can't get into the poll form -
>Durante gets my vote

There is no way of sneaking votes in like that!

There is either a problem with the site/browser combination or more likely...

It could be that you just need to wait a while and try again. I'm loath to explain much about how the primitive security works to stop people clicking themselves silly to vote for their favourite, but suffice it to say that if you try again after a few more votes have gone through you should be OK.

Final point and something which might be considered a bug.. but is unlikely to be fixed or changed. You see the poll at the tope of Postings page and you hit the link to go through to the Mini-poll page. Hopefully if you have not voted before it shows you a poll form and a vote button. It also gives you a link to look at the results. Now if you take that link to see the results.. you indeed get the results *but* the system then thinks you have voted and is loath to let you vote again. So if you have not voted and want to vote and you are offered a chance to vote, then I sussgest you use it immediately.

(er.. and I've looked at the code and I didn't immediately see how I can fix this - its a constraint that we will have to live with I think).

Looks like you will have to run two polls - one for votes and one on the message boards for people to suggest who to vote for - then pick the names that come up most often I love these polls - thanks for putting the time into setting them up!!!

Yoshida first performances of RandJ in London did not go down to well with many of the critics. They critized her acting ability (or lack of it). It was left to Clement Crisp and the Spectactor critic to sing her praises.

My personal observations is that the Yoshida was a more childish Juliet - more in keeping with her age of less then 14. Whilst I do prefer the more passionate performances of Durante I think Yoshida made a worthwhile artistic decision to play a more girlish Juliet. It is better that she goes her own way then to copy other dancers no matter how good they are! It is what makes ballet so enjoyable - different interpretations. I would rather have Yoshida and Durante with their respective interpretations then Durante only!

But I cant imagine anyone better then Irek as Romeo. Pity the role is not so good!

Well, Trinidad Sevillano would get my vote any day (nobody said we had to restrict it to the Macmillan!), except I'm not sure whether she's still dancing - haven't seen any mention of her anywhere recently. She's the only dancer to have moved me to tears on several occasions, although perhaps the fact that no Macmillan Juliet ever has is a reflection of some sort on his ballet?
