Perhaps you could give a short review about each dancer you have seen and in what roles, when etc...so we can get a glimpse of their talent?
Of that list, I have only seen Nureyev and Makarova.

   EXACTLY my thought too!

It's nice in a way to know that one did see legends - including some who are presumably sheltering under 'Other'. I thought that when I saw some of the Russians suggested when the poll was under discussion - I saw Vasiliev and Maximova, Plisetskaya etc. during the Bolshoi's visit in 1963. I have also seen Bruhn and Villella.

Maybe one poll ought to be 'who are the dancers of today who will qualify for a 'legends' poll
thirty or forty years hence'? Maybe it's just that everyone remembers the dancers they saw just as they were beginnning to go to ballet regularly and a certain cynicism sets in later?
thirty or forMa

Personally, I was always partial to Taglioni.

I agree, Bruce. She lost that charming, provincial freshness after she came to the Opera -- and of course, all that pointework simply ruined her.

Quite right and to be honest I've never been convinced by all this pointe stuff - it's just a dead end and sooner or later we will get back to proper ballet basics!!

Right again, Bruce, and it can't be soon enough for me. A good, solid revival of "Jason and Medea" or "The Loves of Mars and Venus" would give audiences all the drama they could possibly want, without all that silly clattering about on toe. It all started to go wrong with the Revolution, I fear. Perhaps the millennium will set things right. But of course, by now Taglioni is a bit past her prime....

   Please.

Taglioni was *no* Camargo.

Yours sincerely, etc.

Oooo! I should say she wasn't! Camargo was nothing but a saucy little tart who got attention by ripping up her clothes, jumping without wearing underwear, and doing men's steps. Thank goodness those days are gone forever. Taglioni, on the other hand, was the pure, chaste embodiment of the serene Italian temperament. And she could do more than four entrechats too, so there!

A More Disgruntled Viewer

I fail to comprehend how anyone who is as obviously foreign as your are, dear but misguided disgruntled viewer, could understand the subtletly and frisky beauty with which Mlle. Camargo could expose her well-turned ankles to us at the Opera. The smooth beautiful skin of her throat and decolletage, her lovely arms. Her firm breasts, her comely buttocks. Her, her. . .I am overcome with emotion on recalling her various body parts. Taglioni, on the other hand, was serene indeed, almost glacial, mummified might even be the right word. Perhaps the ribbons on her new-fangled darned shoes could have been used to wrap the corpse.

Yours, etc.

A firm admirer of the frolicsome Mlle. Camargo.

In response to message #10

It's nice to see such partial opinions about dancers, although they haven't appeared in London in the recent past (not to my knowledge however!)

My original suggestion remains unaddressed!! i.e. shall we get to hear about famous dancers seen in performance by the ballet.co readers/viewers??

I wonder if it could become some sort of feature in the pages, a short reminiscence of dancers seen let's say before 1990 or something like that. it could be limited to 50 words or so.

What do the ballet.co organizers think?

Sounds great to me.

I suggest you start a new thread on this, briefly explain the idea and select the dancer you are keen to know more about. And by all means chivy us along with other suggestions as and when!

This will hopefully be a nice adjunct to Jane's Legends pages (http://www.ballet.co.uk/contexts/legends.htm) and the Ballet Years section (http://www.ballet.co.uk/contexts/ballet_years.htm)
