"Bruce Sansom gone?"

I've heard from several sources today (unconfirmed) that Bruce Sansom has been sacked from the RB. Can anyone confirm or deny this?

If true, it does seem strange given his success at Sadler's in 'The Turn of the Screw' and 'Rhapsody'.

If untrue, it would be good to lay the rumour to rest double quick.

If this is true it is absolutely appalling. The Royal Ballet has "let go" too many of it's best dancers over the last few years (including Lesley Collier and Fiona Chadwick). The Royal Ballet desperately need "senior" artists to set an example to it's younger dancers. No wonder there seems to be a distinct lack of talent coming up in the ranks at present. This is just another example (if true) of Dowell's weak and ill judged direction. The sooner he goes the better.

LAST EDITED ON 15-Nov-99 AT 05:48 PM (GMT)

Below is the original post. The thing I wanted to add is that I've subsequently heard something which gives me some pause for thought and makes me wonder if there are some funny politics being played out here.

The thing we all note is that it would be a very sad thing if Sansom were not to dance with RB again and if nothing else thats a very positive message to come out of this thread.

######
Tight lips all around at ROH at the moment - on and off the record. Therefore conclude it's very probably true.

The only permanent principal men in the company who have been there for more than about a year are Jonathan Cope and Bruce Sansom. If Sansom is really gone that leaves Cope... who was unwell in the summer and is still not well enough to dance with Sylvie Guillem in Japan at the moment. I hope his illness is not too serious because it seems to look like he is the last of the old boys who can remember those halcyon days of 1998...

Still I suppose it could be worse had Anthony Dowell not held it all together so well.

This is all appalling news if it is true. All the RB men disappearing at an alarming rate. Does anybody know what is exactly wrong with Johnny? If Sansom rumours true, suggest that Darcey sets up her own Teddy-style company with Friends !

How does one get sacked during the pre-season rehearsal periods.

Given that there are stringent union rules about dismisals it must either be

1) extremely serious misconduct or insubordinaton
2) if he is completely out of shape due to to much indulgence during the off season
3) He no longer fits into the RB plans. In this case they would come to some sort of agreement as one years notice is required for termination of contracts.

I cannot think of any other reason!

Well, I have some sort of news on this.

This afternoon, out of sheer frustration I rang the Royal Ballet press office. The answering machine was on and I left my name and number. To my utter amazement, they rang me not ten minutes ago (at 9.40 pm.). They had heard the rumours too but were at a loss to know where they came from. The woman said the press office had checked with the RB management who said very firmly that BS was still with the company. She said that she herself had spoken with Bruce three times today and he was perfectly cheerful with no hint of anything out of the way. I asked if he knew about the rumours and she was a bit cagey, but she did say he had internet access.

Finally, I asked her if it was alright for me to post a message about our conversation and she said 'of course'.

So, David, where did you hear these rummours?

That BS seems not to have been sacked is the most enormous relief. He is the senior principal (with all that implies), a fantastic Ashton stylist and a credit to the company. Irek admires him greatly...
Thank God.

Much as we love and admire Bruce as a peerless and impeccably stylish artist, he hasn't been as technically strong in the past season (witness the rather messy bum lifts in Fille), and we'll have to face the fact that he may want to retire within the next couple of years. I remember the same happening to Stephen Jeffries about 1985, just as Bruce was really coming into prominence....
