"Scottish Ballet / Scottish Opera announces new Chairman"

November 8, 1999

The directors of the joint board of Scottish Ballet and Scottish Opera today announce the election of Duncan McGhie as Chairman of Scottish Ballet / Scottish Opera - the new joint company for the merged technical and administrative departments of both organisations.

Born in Glasgow, Duncan McGhie qualified as a Chartered Accountant in Edinburgh in 1967 and went on to join the newly formed British Steel Corporation, latterly as a Financial Controller of the Scottish Division based at Ravenscraig. In 1978 he joined Wm. Collins Publishers as group Finance Director.

Currently a partner of PricewaterhouseCoopers Management Consulting Practice, he has carried out a wide range of consultancy assignments in both the public and private sectors, spanning 15 years both in the UK and abroad. He has specialised in Strategic Change and Organisation and Business Effectiveness.

Duncan McGhie comments:-

"I am delighted to accept the Chairmanship of Scottish Ballet / Scottish Opera. As a long time supporter of both organisations I relish the prospect of working with the companies at such a vital stage in their histories. I very much look forward to working closely with all involved with Scottish Ballet/Scottish Opera and to helping lead the companies to ever healthier artistic and financial futures".

Peg Beveridge, Chair of the Board of Scottish Ballet said:-

"Having known and respected Duncan McGhie for many years, I firmly believe that his appointment as Chairman will be a huge asset in the management of the important and vital process of change for Scottish Ballet/Scottish Opera as well as the long term future of the companies".

Chris Masters, Acting Chairman of the Board of Scottish Opera, comments:-

"I am delighted that Duncan has agreed to chair the joint board. The Board of Scottish Opera is totally committed to securing a stable financial future for both the Opera and the Ballet and I believe that Duncan's appointment represents a major step towards achieving this goal".
