"Videos, Anyone?"
In light of recent discussions on these pages concerning the documentary ‘Ballet Boyz', is there anyone with a video of the series which they would be willing to send to Australia? I'd really like to see this series - there are practically no ballet programs broadcast in Australia these days (and certainly not any controversial ones)!

Alternatively, are there other ballet-related programs which people have taped which they would be willing to lend to me? I'm thinking specifically of recent televised performances of the Royal Ballet, et al., or good documentaries - which can't be purchased from shops.

Thanks to government policies of the recent era, the publicly-funded Australian Broadcasting Corporation, traditionally responsible for televising the arts, can't afford much in the way of quality programs. It's the old story of axing the arts for the benefit of budgets and cost cutting.

The Australian Ballet hasn't had a performance televised for more than 2 years, and the only decent ballet documentaries on TV have been the one about Darcey Bussell, one about Sabine Kupferberg and Fighting Over Fokine (filmed in 1997!). The single full length ballet program this year was the ABT New York Gala - and that was a repeat!!

I appreciate that people would be reluctant to send videos overseas due to postage costs and the understandable turn-off of sending stuff to a stranger - and a foreigner at that! However, I'd be prepared to return the favour by perhaps lending videos of interest which I may have.

Can anyone help? The videos would need to be VHS PAL format.

Screen Sound has recently produced a video titled
"An Avalanche of Dancing" which records and evaluates the influence of the three de Basil Ballet Russe tours in Australia. It is for sale
in PAL format through that agency.
Those of us Amereicans who have never seen Baronova, Riabounchinska, Lichine and Tamara Tchiarnova Findch (who danced under Borovansky), found it enchanting. It also provides snippets of
"Choreartium"' "Carnival", "La Concurrence" "Thamar" and "Les Sylphides". God, such spirit!
It may be only video, but it is so satisfying!

I've got a copy of the Ballet Russes video and I agree that it's very good and most interesting. It's available from the National Gallery of Australia (as well as other outlets) since the Gallery has a large collection of Ballet Russes material including many of the orginal costumes. The NGA should have a webside somewhere or you could try calling the National Gallery Shop on the toll free number 1800 677 609 - if the number works from outside Australia!
