This is a 'thought' rather than a 'review'. I found the performance very special. I had done a ‘double header’. I got up at the crack of dawn to queue for a ‘come and risk it’ rehearsal ticket as well as a day ticket for the first night. Although I have the DVD, I had not seen Mayerling live and I found the experience quite overwhelming – and twice in one day! The Cope/Rojo/Tapper cast did the rehearsal and, of course, the Kobborg/Cojocaru/Galeazzi cast in the evening. Although I naturally have my personal favourites, I’m reluctant to pick any individual dancers out for praise as, in my opinion, they were all outstanding.

I'll want to post something more detailed later but I have to say I thought Kobborg was incredible, just absolutely brilliant. He totally made the role of Rudolf his own. Mara too, and I can't wait to her see her as Vetsera. The surprise for me was Cojocaru - I went in prepared to be disappointed but instead I found her so very convincing. In spite of her sweet exterior, it felt like there was this hint of deviousness behind it. I feel like I really watched her dance as a woman in the ballet, even though Vetsera is supposed to be only 17 (and I wasn't totally convinced in Onegin). Really have to hand to whoever coached her. And of course their pdds did not disappoint. I thought the whole cast were wonderful and the music so, so beautiful - you really feel it in the pit of your stomach! I'd only seen Mayerling on video myself and it just does not compare - you don't see how sumptuous the velevety drapes are and what a gorgeous production it really is.

I was lucky enough to be there and what a night it was! By the end, I was emotionally drained. Kobborg was simply -magnificent as Rudolf. I felt desperately sorry for him by the end and wanted to give his Rudolf a big hug. Witnessing his decline was genuinely harrowing. Cojocaru was monumental but then she is in everything she does. I watched her closely in the final scene when both were sat at the table with Bratfisch entertaining. Her acting was wonderful - so loving and attentive to Rudolf - I was very moved. In the past, I have not been too complimentary about some of Galeazzi's performances. However, last night as Larisch, I consider she gave the performance of her career. She was fantastic. Special metion for Bethany Keating as Stephanie too. She's def one to watch and surely underanked as an artist. At the curtain call, Lynn Seymour and Lady Macmillan came onto the stage - all in all, a very special evening.

Completely agree about the 'specialness': this was ballet on a different plane and showed why the Royal Ballet, when it's doing what it ought to be doing, is the best in the world.

I too had never seen the ballet before and it was also the first time I had seen Cojocaru dance properly. Kobborg as well was a revelation. But then the supporting cast also left me open-mouthed: Putrov in particular and also (name might not be remembered properly) the relatively junior Bethany Keating who played Rudolf's wife.

It was simply stunning. Can't think of anything more erudite than that I'm afraid!

totally agree with all of the above comments .. especially the choice of words it would be impossible to describe the evening without using 'sumptuous' 'stunning' 'beautiful' 'moving'etc ...kobborg was magnificent and really gave everything to therole (I noticed that both his knees were bleeding before the end of act 1 !) cojocaru incredible as always but showing a dark edge to the character that I thought she would be too sweet to achieve ..the entire cast were exceptional ! i consider myself extremely lucky to have tickets for this saturday and next friday.

I'm so glad to read all these wonderful reviews! I thought that this cast had the potential to be mind-blowing and it's great to hear that it was! (but who danced Mitzi Caspar? the only one not to get a mention...) I do so hope that they give Mayerling another outing before too long as I'm not going to be able to see it this run.

I like the ballet very much - but I hated the seats in the amphitheatre - the angle was too high. It is worse then a restricted view!

Sorry but I think I will stick to watching Mayerling on my projector! I simply will not pay £40 for such poor seats!

Thanks to you all for those reviews.....together with those and the one review from one of the broadsheets in the 'latest reviews' section of this site, it inspired me to dust down my credit card, call the ROH box office, wait on the phone for ten minutes, then with the help of a very patient assistant get a box for the 8th, with the same cast from last night which you have all praised so highly. For some reason I missed the postal booking...I think I was abroad when I got the programme. I saw Cojocaru/Kobborg in Giselle earlier in the year, and am seeing them in Swan Lake in December, so this should be the icing on the cake! I haven't seen Mayerling since I saw Seymour/Wall dance it in the late 70s/early 80s, so it will be interesting to compare. Thanks in advance for your advice/critiques on this one!

An outstanding, immensely moving performance, with Kobborg and Cojocaru, quite superlative, leading a faultless cast. A word too for Rosato as Elisabeth and Nunez as Mitzi. It showed how well that the creators, Wall and Seymour, had coached and inspired the principals; it was lovely to see them share the curtain call with Lady Macmillan

Out of interest, does anyone know whether Seymour and Wall coached previous casts, e.g. Mukhamedov/Durante? (If not, why not! But then many of us have complained about the RB not using previous exponents of roles in coaching before). If not, I'm glad to see it's being done at last.

Marianela Nuñez was Mitzi Caspar both at the rehearsal and at the performance - she danced beautifully both times.

I did and it was a pretty special performance. All the leads were pretty special but Mara Galeazzi was something else.

As I've only seen Mayerling on tv before, I was not sure what to expect but its infinitely better enjoyed live as the complexities of plot etc come across much better.

I thought the whole thing was amazing -sets, costumes and ensemble perforamce. I've not seen something that moved or impressed me this much in a long time.

There must have been some pages missing from your programme. Mine had biographies in it - but only of the 'main' characters - i.e. those named in the casting on the ROH website

LAST EDITED ON 31-10-02 AT 09:09 PM (GMT)

I had the privilege of attending the pre-performance talk on Wed 30th, which was given by Monica Mason. She gave us an outline of the ballet, and the true history of Crown Prince Rudolph, especially his very difficult childhood. He was kept apart from his mother and had a series of harsh tutors. This helped to explain the scene where he dances with his mother in her rooms and they find it so hard to communicate.
Monica also described the tragedy of Sir Kenneth Macmillan's death ten years ago during the performance of Mayerling.
She was a close friend of Sir Kenneth and it was very moving to
hear her describe the sad events of that night.
I then went in to see Robert Tewsley as Rudolph,he gave the most fantastic performance ,as did Mara Galeazzi as Mary Vetsera. The whole cast were excellent, with special mention of Ricardo Cervera as Bratfisch, just superb!
