" RB dancer Paul Clarke"

This is my first post, and I'm hoping someone here will be able to answer my questions.

As a child, I remember paging through a ballet book and admiring a photo of a dancer by the name of Paul Clarke, but never being able to find any information about him. Just recently, I was utterly shocked when I came across one line in a book stating that he had died in 1976 at the age of 29. Does anyone know specifically what happened to him? Any other information about him? (All I know is that he danced with both the Royal Ballet and London Festival Ballet, and his first appearance with RB was in 1964.)I'm curious to know if anyone here remembers him and/or has ever had the opportunity to see him dance. Thanks.

Marie - it's an awful story. He died whilst having dental treatment. I saw him quite often - he was first noticed because he looked a bit like Christopher Gable, very blond, but he established himself very soon and got to be a principal in the RB touring company. Then he, together with Patricia Ruanne and Kerrison Cooke, left to join what was then Festival Ballet - the RB was experimenting with a different repertoire for the touring company at the time and had cut out all the classics. He was in the middle of a successful career when he died. There's a scholarship in his name - at least there used to be, it was in the Dancing Times every year.

I'll send you

Thanks for answering my questions. I'm glad that someone remembers him, and I apologise if bringing up such a long ago tragedy was upsetting to anyone.

I understand it is not strictly true that he died having dental treatment. As I heard it,he was having his teeth done as he was going to play Nijinsky in the film VALENTINO ( a part eventually taken by Anthony Dowell). Although he died very suddenly after the treatment the two were not related. He had a heart condition which was not known about, and he could have died at any time.

Still very tragic, but probably not preventable, I guess. It sounds very similar to what happened to Russian figure skater Sergei Grinkov a couple years ago. (He died of a heart attack during practice at the age of 28, and it was discovered he had an undiagnosed heart condition.)

As for the movie 'Valentino', I've seen it...tracked it down awhile back specifically because Anthony Dowell was in it. He's my all-time favourite dancer, and I just had to see the tango scene of him and Nureyev. I had never heard before that Clarke was originally going to play Nijinsky.
