"Next Mini-Poll"

I hope you enjoy the latest mini-poll, but I want to prepare for next weeks...

The question is going to be "Which ballet would you like to bin?"

As usual we need about 10 popular (or unpopular!) answers. Suggestions please...

RB's Don Quixote? I loved it, but I don't think it went down too well in some quarters.

   Ondine.

And in case Runcible doesn't get here in time, I'll add James Kudelka's Swan Lake (gang bang in the first act, anyone?)

Oh, and any "reinterpretations" of Petipa by the Bolshoi - specifically their current Giselle and Swan Lake.

Ditto Derek Deane's Romeo and Juliet. Although the dancing balcony should get its own show.

Sorry but am I reading this correctly - a gang rape in Swan Lake? If it is true it sounds absolutely appalling (and box office poison as children cannot see it!). Or am I reading this too literally?

Now back to the Jerry Springer show!

Nope, you're reading it perfectly correctly.

Apparently there are two women in the first act of Kudelka's Swan Lake: the Queen and an unfortunate maid who is gang raped.

I should add I haven't seen this production, this is what I was told by a source that I would certainly regard as reliable.

You could try http://www.kim-glasco.com for more details - this Swan Lake proved controversial for several reasons.

Your information is correct. I suppressed this in my recent review (see www.balletalert.com) because, in the context of the overall prodction, this becomes just one more gratuitous and superfluous detail. It occurs at the end of Act I toward upstage right and under the stairs via which the Queen and her courtiers make their entrance and exit. The real question (for me, anyway) is why Mr. Kudelka came up with a character he calls "A Wench" and two peasants whirling about with long rake handles aloft, and what he means by their inclusion in Swan Lake, Act I.
