Never having seen ballet on a large screen I was interested in Eugene's comments. I dislike dance on video on a home television having never found the quality good enough for enjoyable viewing and always fretting at the lack of choice of view. However, Eugene's rave about the big screen has got me wondering - but the cost seems prohibitive especially as one would presumably have to move house to have a space large enough in which to view in comfort.

First, spend £2k on a projector, £200 on a DVD player and ooh let's see, what about 10 ballet videos at £20 each. So that's £2.5k. How many top price tickets will that buy you? Almost 40! I know which I'd rather do!

... but my husband may have a different view, so I'll ask him tonight. (He doesn't have a different financial perspective, though!)

This article makes me very curious to see the overwhelming impact of ballet on a big screen.
I'll take a ballet-DVD to my dealer to try it out !
Maybe we all have to go and watch ballet at Eugene's place, tickets will only be a fraction of the real thing !!!

LAST EDITED ON 11-09-02 AT 01:02 PM (GMT)

Perhaps there are not enough ballets to justify the expense of a projector but there are other huge benefits - I have for the first time began to appreciate films as art!

You hardly need a larger room for a projector - I get a hundred inch picture from a projector just eight feet away! In fact they are ideal for small homes because they can set up and put away within minutes. Whilst they are not been use they can be stored in a closet.

You may have remembered my posting about taking a DV-camera to the ballet - perhaps now people might appreciate why I have been so keen to do this. I want more material for my projector. Modern DV cameras are tiny and very silent and supposedly give DVD picture quality. So it would make a awesome addition to the projector. I would love to shoot Cojacaru in Sleeping beauty and relive it again and again on my projector!

As projectors fall in price I begin to worry about the future of any live performance and cinemas. I use to go out 3-4 times a week - now I hardly go out at all! (that should change this year as their is a lot a great stuff at the RB this season)

I was joking about moving house. But isn't it supposed to be bad for the eyes or the brain to sit too close to a huge screen? Or is that an old wives' tale - when television was first available people used to sit in darkened rooms to watch it and now we know that that's neither necessary nor desirable.

Tiny and silent maybe but I shouldn't like to sit next to someone eagerly training a camera on the action and in any case it's against the rules.

And as Eugene said himself, he'd only be getting one angle so it would be inferior to a studio film anyway!!!

How could you tell? They are no bigger than the opera glasses and mini binoculars many people use and a great deal less apparent than the huge field glasses that some ballet fans are equipped with.

Goodness - I had no idea that were THAT small! Makes mental note to be more discreet with own huge field glasses in future!
