"Swan Lake"

A friend of mine wants to buy a video of Swan Lake and asked me to recommend one. I had looked for a good "Swan Lake" video myself but couldn't find one. In the end I bought the Paris Opera Ballet one with Patrick Dupond, which I enjoyed but wouldn't call the best. I also watched the Vienna Ballet one Eugene had reviewed. My friend is thinking of the Royal Ballet one with Makarova and Dowell or the one with Evelyn Hart produced by Makarova(?). Are they any good? I think she wants a good traditional Swan Lake. Can anyone recommend ?

I like the Royal Ballet one as well, though of course it doesn't reflect current standards of dancing at the RB. (And the RB `Swan Lake' itself has changed quite a bit, too, since then.)
I recently bought a tape of the Kirov `Swan Lake' with Zaklinsky and Mezentseva - and found it very good indeed. (But if you don't like the jester....)
I suppose what you choose will depend on which dancers and which production you prefer.

I think the best one in the UK is the Evelyn Hart/English National Ballet version. Marakova based it on Ashton's outstanding Royal Ballet version. It is not ideal - it is scaled down for small companies, the costumes are uninispiring and the picture quality is poor. It has a younger looking Leanne Benjamin in the pas de quatre.

The Paris Opera version is marked by ghastly costumes and gimmicky Soviet choreography by Victor Bourmiester. It combines the very worst of the west and the Soviets.

Kirov version is OK except that it is rather lifeless and unexciting. It also has the Soviet style happy ending.

The Nureyev and Fonteyn version is nice but it is heavily edited and I did not much care for Nureyev choreography. But nice peformances.

The best one is the Dowell and Mararkova 1980 version. Great performances (a little over the top for Marakova perhaps) and wonderful designs and choreography. But dancing looks rather dated by todays standards! It is only available in the US on the Kultur label.

Thanks to Wendy & Eugene for the info. How about the Kirov version with Makhalina and Zelensky ?
Have you watched it ? I remember reading somewhere Makhalina's Odette is breathtaking.

I was referring to the Kirov version with Makhalina and Zelensky in my above commentary. It is a nice performance but hardly breath taking!

I'm actually going to have to agree with Eugene here (shock horror!). I do think the Kirov version is lacking something, but it's a nice Swan Lake, it's their current production - and Zelensky is an interesting Siegfried. He's great in roles like that (he's also incredibly young in the video - I doubt he was 20 when it was made, and he just looks like a product of the Soviet training system), while Makhalina is a good, if not inspired, Odette.

Of course, if you really want me to recommend a Swan Lake, I'd have to say Cooper/Ambler in AMP's version, but somehow I don't think that's what you meant . . .

The first Swan Lake I ever saw was the video with Dowell and Makarova. I've got several other video versions, but it's still my favourite one. Avoid the Bolshoi production though - it's more of a 'psychological' Swan Lake (according to one commentary about it)! Personally, the Grigorovich Bolshoi version is NOT one I can recommend!

Thanks to everyone who responded to my post. It was very interesting to hear your opinions. Just to let you know my friend has decided to go for the RB's version with Dowell.
