"Don Q"

Friends who are not regular ballet goers, but regular ROH goers, were at Monday's performance: very disappointed at the tawdry preoduction and standard of performance. Nunez not ready, stale company, Acosta strong was the gist of their reaction. Opinions may be influnced by disappointment at not seeing Rojo - but they have a sound appreciation of what's good. It didn't feel like it on Monday.

Interestingly they had enjoyed the broadcast on TV at Christmas.

I went to see the performance this evening and was dissappointed that Cojocaru was not dancing...however with Acosta and Nunez as the replacements I couldn't really complain!

The first two acts were really good. I was very impressed with Jenny Tattersall as Amour and Nunez was really on form with the fan hitting! The only annoying point was Mara Galeazzi is still really stiff when she is performing and warms up only for the finish of her solos! Otherwise it was good.

The third act was a bit mixed. Great opening as usual and the Corps were on form as always, then came the surprise. The opening of the Grand pas was bad...really bad. Acosta and Nunez who are natural partners seemed really uneasy with each other and Acosta seemed to change his mind about his big jump halfway through it! Nunez was very wobbly and her supported piourettes were very unsteady.

However their solos were excellent as expected and I started to feel a little better. Nunez did about 38 fouettes but some were rather sloppy.

Overall, though the most fluid performance I have seen so far.
