"Lots of great ballet on TV in JULY!"

With digital classics joining the Sky TV network as a non-subscription channel we have more ballet then ever.

Yesterday they broadcasted the POB school version of Coppelia. But more interesting will the broadcast of Roland Petit Carmen July 7. There is no casting info but this could be the Kumakawa - Durante performance. They are also doing the Kirov Swan Lake with Zelensky and Makhalina. And the Nutcracker (no credits so far) Also look out for La Bayadere - they broadcasted it fairly recently and might do it again. Check out their web site on www.digitalclassics.tv (note funny ending)

Arts world have given their ballet schedule for July on

http://www.artsworld.com/tv/programme-highlights/ballet-on-artsworld.html

of note is
Merry Widow (today at 3.15) This is the classic Karen Kain version)
Shakespeare Suite (this Sunday at 7 pm)
Puss In Boots
Sleeping Beauty
Manon (Dowell and Penney)

Could someone please tape the Carmen for me!? Yes, I am in the states but I do have a machine that does the PAL thing so that is no problem. I will gladly pay for tape and postage. Thanks so much.

I don't think it will be the Carmen by Durante & Kumakawa. I think it will be the one by Jeanmaire and Baryshnikov, which has been available on video for a long time. The K-Ballet's DVD is available only in Japan and the performance has not been shown on TV even in Japan yet.

IT is the Jeanmaire/Baryshinikov version -they showed it yesterday.

Digital Classics TV is certainly a welcome addition to sky

That's the problem with most of the ballet on Artsworld and Performance - it is all commercially available on video and most of us will have it already - I think I've got every one of the videos mentioned in Eugene's posting! Only the BBC, in the end, has the wherewithal to film or commission new work, and they do so only rarely because of the enormous costs involved.

Dont make excuses for the BBC, they are not really interested in dance. Under Greg Dyke they have become interested in ratings, trouncing ITV with trash! At least with Artsworld you get ballet even if they have a tiny budget compared to the BBC or ITV. If more people subscribed they be able to do more recording, the BBC would not, it is as simple as that.

   Anne
Sorry to come back so soon but I notice that Artsworld are doing both the BRBs Shakespeare suite and Rambert's Triple Bill this week. I am not sure they are available commercially. What did the BBC do this week?
