"Sadler's Wells in nudity shocker"

Shock horror - following a controversial spring season at Sadler's Wells where the half-dozen dance companies on offer have ranged from the dance equivalent of a wet T-shirt competition, through dancing virtually in skimpy undies and toplessness to full-frontal male and female nudity, Sadler's Wells are pleased to announce a programme in which none of the dancers gets any of his/her kit off .

(Well, of course, I'm only making an assumption that Alvin Ailey and/or PNB's performances will fit this description!)

Disappointed dancegoers should however note that the autumn/winter season looks potentially promising .

I was wondering to myself why I've always disliked nudity in dance. In Bella Figura for instance I wish the women had tops to those gorgeous scarlet skirts. I dont particularly mind nudity in theatre, and in painting, sculpture or photography the naked human form has often been beautifully portrayed. So why not dance?
I decided that the reason is probably quite simple, and it's that a dancer has complete control over what every bit of their body does (and to a large extent how it looks), except for their breasts and external genitalia.
Always better covered I think.

Nice one Carly - I think you are absolutely spot on re apendages. And on Bella Figura in particular, yes, some tops to match the poppy red skirts would have worked better. If you want to do sex get a professional I say - MacMillan!

Carly - you've set me thinking about a suitable top for those lovely red skirts. Do you think a really elegant black sleeveless top with a cowl neck would look good? (I'm a wannabe Jean Muir, really).

More seriously,I agree absolutely with you point about nudity in dance. Unnecessary, distracting and often embarrassing.

I too have wondered why I do not appreciate people dancing in the nude, and I am inclined to agree with you. I often paint people in the nude, and have always found it challenging, interesting and exciting. I sometimes use a model who is interested in dance, but for dance related poses I prefer her to wear clothes, I am not sure why but I think it looks better, perhaps it is that dance in civilised western society is allied to costume, gesture and music.

This is where I struggle with MacMillan - he is much too literal.

Prefer something more metaphorical, say Balanchine with the prodigal son and the siren.

Yes I think even a very sheer black Herman Schmerman type top would look better on the women. Leave the men topless though - they look great in those skirts!
