"New poll: Which balance of number of ballet/dance pieces to number of casts would you prefer?"

LAST EDITED ON 20-06-02 AT 02:57 PM (GMT)

I couldn't explain this poll any better than Alexandra has already done...(thank you for the idea!)

...we often hear that programs are under-rehearsed because the company is stretched to the limit because it performs so many ballets...the difference is, I think, that today we have, say, 20 ballets with 3 or 4 or 5 casts each, while yesterday we had 60 ballets with 1 cast and an understudy cast.

So which would you prefer? It's a toughie and I know I'll have arrows thrown my way for not including more options. Responses please!

I'm interested in how this Mini-poll is shaping up. Currently 70% of visitors prefer the more pieces from fewer dancers option. I think it shows our thirst for variety, but there is a dimension here of growing dancers. And if we don't grow dancers in a variety of work they may not reach their full potential for all of us. Is this a shared worry at all? It's a fascinating poll in making one think deep about "how it all works" for the best.

But but but Bruce - you didn't say it had to be the same 2 casts dancing each of the 60 pieces! So more pieces, fewer dancers gives as much scope to the dancers as fewer pieces, more dancers! It means each dancer dances a smaller percentage of the repertoire but given the increased size of the repertoire it isn't decreasing their range. Which reminds me, I must vote.

Lots of different ballets also makes it easier to give different types of dancers something to do - e.g, to pick up a current discussion, Edward Watson doesn't have to be 5th cast Albrecht but can be 1st cast in a couple of ballets that no-one else can do.

I'm squarely on the "fewer casts" side. I hope artistic directors are reading this!

I remember reading long ago a comment by a French critic about the Royal Ballet's visit to Paris (in the late 30s????) that "I like it especially that Margot does not have all the best parts." I didn't understand it then -- why wouldn't you want your ballerina to have all the best parts? -- but I understand it better now. It's lovely to have five or six dancers each with special parts, parts especially suited to them. And if you get a triple bill with three ballets lead by three such dancers -- well, I'd rather have that than an indifferent production of a full-length with the fifth cast ballerina in her second of two performances of the season.

That's the other reason, that with fewer casts, there are more performances, and a dancer might get to dance a part 10, or even 20!, times in a season, and that's when they really get to understand a role and grow in it -- that's another way of "growing" dancers. At ABT a few years ago, there were seven performances of "Apollo" and seven Apollos. Once, there weren't seven Apollos in the whole world -- and there still aren't, I'd argue. That was reserved for Very Great Dancers. Can even such an Apollo develop a role like that with one performance in a season? And how can you adequately rehearse seven Apollos?

I think the fewer casts, more ballets ultimately benefits the dancers, as well as the audience (not to mention the ballets!)
