"ROH Sale"

LAST EDITED ON 17-06-02 AT 04:43 PM (GMT)

I seem to remember seeing something somewhere in a brochure advertising a used props/costume sale at the ROH on Sunday 4th August.
Did anyone else spot it? Can someone tell me what's likely to be on offer, for how much, and when you have to arrive to stand a chance of picking something up? Or is this a first?

I think I saw the announcement on the hand-bill from the R&J broadcast in the plaza

Don't know the specifics of this one but previous sales, about 10 years ago were a treasure trove, though other companies/ societies has made offers or bought in advance of the actual sale.

They're pretty much a scrum but good stuff to be had. A friend got a pair of Joan Sutherland's shoes one time(they're not his size though).

There's a thought! The last production was sold to Boston I think. Would imagine this would earn them more sold complete rather than ad hoc.

Well, from the point of view of ballet, I'd say costumes from dancers who have left the company (they should all have name tags inside), or ones which are deemed too tatty to continue being used or which have been outgrown, plus some productions which won't be repeated (This House Will Burn, anyone? ). I'm not sure when the last one of these took place, because certainly I haven't seen one advertised for a few years, so no idea quite how much stuff there will be to get rid of. I seem to remember that amateur and semi-professional theatrical companies tend to buy things up in bulk for their own productions (just think how many ballet costumes could be used in panto. Gulp), so you might have to get there early if you want the really good stuff. I don't remember noticing what the prices were last time I went, unfortunately.

Bruce, that wasn't how you got Miyako's tutu, was it?

What time does it start? Does anyone remember if there are opportunities to 'try on' before you buy-else you could have a very expensive mistake if it didn't fit (outside all possible alterations!)
Thanks

Costumes from Mark Thompson's Don Q - is that a goodbye to the Baryshnikov production?

Good riddance to the production, although I admit I did like a lot of the costumes - apart from some of the girls' ones in the last act, which reminded me of slugs!

Also notice "Maria Bjornson's ...". Sleeping Beauty, I presume?

Anyone have the slightest idea what prices could be like? VERY tempted... but unless any of the costumes are Darcey's from her immediately post-injury phase when she was possibly within a stone of my usual weight then not a cat in hell's chance that I could use the excuse that a tutu would do for a fancy dress party!

I'm sure that she was designing an opera production at the same time as she was working on Sleeping Beauty. In 'The House' (TV fly-on-the-wall in 1996) I seem to remember that her problems were made plain; there could be a lot of Maria B. for sale.

I wonder if they'll try to sell the mangy tiger from La Bayadere so that they can get a better one.

Oooh, I want that if so! Not sure where I would put it or how I would get it across the Atlantic, but sure seems like it would be fun. maybe it would work as a couch.

   maybe

I think it would; it looks as if it could be soft and saggy. I reckon it could be squashed into a crate for a container ship.

I'll bet there are lots of props that could be upgraded, and regulars at the ROH will have their own favourites. Also, some of the costumes need a new look - La Bayadere is a prime example, though who would buy some of the stuff the men have to wear in that production?

If anyone wants a touch of genuine 60's style, there are always the little white PVC numbers that the dancers wore for 'Paradise Lost', including the one that Fonteyn wore when she got it dirty in one of the grubby old lifts under the ROH stage. Eve was not quite pure white that night.

For sheer curiosity value, there's a story that a backcloth was once painted at the ROH with a strange brown circle on it. Someone had put a coffee cup on the original plan, which was then copied religiously in every detail. I was told this story on more than one backstage tour of the ROH; have others heard it? I wonder where the original drawing is now; in a theatre museum, or back with the designer?

I think I recognise a Sleeping Beauty costume on the ROH web.

I desperately need a tutu- standard one not romantic. I am thinking about coming to the sale to see if I could get one becuase the ones from the shops are usually v tacky with plastic jewls and neon sequins etc.-not nice on stage so has anyone ever bought one? How much? Is there a massive scramble? Will they even sell them seperately? I dont want an old sugar plum one or extravagant thing, just a simpler plain one will do. As I live about 200 miles away Id rather check prices here with others before making the lengthy journey. And with the sale, does the early-bird really catch the worm or should i turn up later on for a bargin if everything-must-go? thanks cc

I've just seen Monica Mason on the BBC lunchtime news showing her Carabosse costume from Sleeping Beauty - I think it was 275, but there are lots of cheaper things. She said it was beautiful and very well-made - wouldn't fall apart at the seams - but she couldn't imagine anyone wearing it on the underground. Oh, I don't know - it might cheer people up. Now's your chance to be a wicked fairy.

Well, at least I'd have a sporting chance of fitting in to that one! And to think I remember the days when she was a Lilac Fairy... Started watching SB vid again the other night to see if there were any costumes I'd like!
